Red Wings F Kris Draper retires after 20 seasons @NHL

DETROIT (AP) - Kris Draper is retiring from the NHL after 20 seasons, the last 17 with the Detroit Red Wings.

The 40-year-old Draper helped the Red Wings win four Stanley Cups. He is one of five players to be a part of those most recent Detroit Stanley Cup winners (1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008).

Draper was one of the NHL's top checking forwards, penalty killers and face-off men.

The organization acquired him from the Winnipeg Jets on June 30, 1993, for $1 - the waiver price back then.

His 1,137 games played with the Red Wings is fifth in franchise history and his 222 playoff games is second.
