DETROIT (AP) -The Detroit Red Wings followed a big loss with a workmanlike effort that proved to be good enough.

Johan Franzen's goal 3:35 into overtime gave Detroit a 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night. Franzen brought the puck off the left boards, skated across the high slot and beat Ilya Bryzgalov for his 27th goal.

"Fil (Valtteri Filppula) won the draw back to (Brad Stuart). I kind of followed him up there on the blue line and created some space for myself," Franzen said. "The D usually don't want to follow you that far up, so I got some room there in the middle."

Filppula had a goal and an assist, and Brian Rafalski also scored for the Red Wings, who lost 8-2 to Columbus at home on Saturday night. Franzen added an assist on Filppula's goal, and Ty Conklin made 23 saves.

"We had to bounce back and play a lot better, obviously, than the last game," Franzen said. "It was a tight game and huge for us to come up with the victory."

Detroit coach Mike Babcock liked the effort.

"I thought we did a lot of real good things. I thought we had a lot of quality chances," he said. "Bryzgalov was good, but we had a lot of traffic. They're loose now and they're thinking of themselves as not being in (the playoffs), and they have a lot of young kids who skate well."

Martin Hanzal and Shane Doan scored for Phoenix, which has lost six of seven. Bryzgalov stopped 40 shots.

"It was good to come back and get the tie at the end," Coyotes coach Wayne Gretzky said. "A little disappointed that we didn't get the win, but all in all, I thought our guys played pretty hard."

Doan's power-play goal with 8:09 left made it 2-2. His 25th goal came when Ed Jovanovski's screened wrist shot from the point went in off of him.

Rafalski broke a 1-1 tie with a power-play goal with 9:23 left. He scored his ninth goal when his wrist shot from the left circle trickled through Bryzgalov's pads.

It was Detroit's only power play of the game.

"We know how good their power play is, and you can't give them that many chances," Doan said.

Filppula opened the scoring on the game's first shot just 1:18 in. He beat Bryzgalov from the bottom of the left circle for his ninth goal after taking a pass from Franzen.

"It was a good 3-on-2 and Mule (Franzen) made a good pass to me," Filppula said. "I was by myself with the goal. I tried to shoot high, and it went in."

Hanzal tied it with 3:47 left in the first period when he brought the puck out of the corner untouched and jammed it past Conklin for his 10th goal.

Notes: Detroit RW Tomas Holmstrom returned after missing 18 games because of a sports hernia. ... Red Wings RW Marian Hossa didn't play because of a sore back and knee. ... Coyotes captain Doan played in his 950th game. He is tied with Thomas Steen for second place in Winnipeg Jets-Phoenix Coyotes franchise history.
