CALGARY - The Red Deer Rebels selected centre Ryan Nugent-Hopkins from Burnaby, B.C., first overall in the Western Hockey League's bantam draft Thursday.

The five-foot-10, 145-pound captain of the Burnaby Winter Club Bruins was named most valuable player at the Western Canada bantam championship in April with 10 goals and four assists in five games.

This year's WHL bantam draft features players born in 1993 (age 14 and 15).

The Rebels earned the first pick in the draft by winning a lottery of non-playoff teams.
