RAPID REACTION:There were plenty of goals in this one as the Blackhawks opened their preseason homestand with an 8-6 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.
Chicago found themselves down 1-0 just 16 seconds into the first when Thomas Vanek buried a loose puck from the slot with the first shot of the game.
Brent Seabrook's point shot was tipped in front by Matthew Highmore for the equalizer at 1:51.

The second period seemed like it would be much of the same, with Darren Helm and Jonathan Toews trading goals. However, the Red Wings took over from there with three straight scores. It wasn't until Toews buried his second of the night with a nice redirection to make it 6-4 that the Blackhawks were able to slow their opponent's momentum.
Anton Forsberg replaced Cam Ward to start the third period between the pipes.

Nick Schmaltz buried a backdoor feed from Patrick Kane to make it a 6-5 game.
At 4:23 of the third, following a turnover, the Red Wings hammered a shot past Forsberg to extend their lead to 7-5.
Duncan Keith buried a slap shot at 11:28 of the third to once again pull the Blackhawks to within one goal. However, Vanek scored again for Detroit at 13:56 to give the visitors an 8-6 lead.
KAHUN MAKES AN IMPACT:Kahun is doing everything in his power to make the Blackhawks roster. Playing on the top line with Jonathan Toews and Alex DeBrincat, Kahun was visible, especially in the opening period. The forward had a great shift midway through the first when he nearly scored after speeding behind the defense. Then he and Toews connected before Kahun set up Brandon Manning for a legitimate scoring chance. His highlight-reel goal came at 15:45 of the opening frame when he used skill and superb hand-high coordination to bat the puck into the net. Late in the game, with roughly six minutes to go, Kahun sped up the wing and centered a pretty pass for Toews, which led to a great look.

TOEWS GETS GOING:The captain potted two goals in different ways. His first came at 7:40 of the second on the power play. Kane's shot went wide and Toews gathered it from behind the net and banked in a steep-angle shot. Toews scored again later in the period when he redirected a shot from Jan Rutta, shorthanded.

POWER PLAY CLICKS:Not only did Toews score on the man advantage, but Schmaltz added a power-play goal of his own 50 seconds into the third period. Kane found him backdoor for the score. The Blackhawks finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play. However, they did allow a shorthanded goal in the third that killed their momentum.
TALKING POINTS:
"There was some good, but I think the biggest thing was just the defensive play. We had a lot of puck possession for the majority of the game, but it seemed that every time we coughed it up, we were giving up some quality scoring chances against. We've been talking a lot about being better and snugging things up in front of our own net. Tonight wasn't the best example of that."
- Jonathan Toews on the takeaways from the game
"Not good. Definitely was a rough game, personally. Got off to a rough start right from the get go. Unfortunate bounce right from the front and put it in, unfortunately just wasn't able to get comfortable throughout the game. It was just one of those games. Whether it's preseason or not you want to put forth a good outing, a good effort. Tonight just wasn't the night. I'm going to do what I can to flush it away, not let it ruin my training camp and just get ready for the next one."
- Cam Ward on his performance
"I thought he was good. I thought they did some good things and looked dangerous. They made plays together well and Johnny at the net…they did some good things." -
