BRAMPTON, Ont. - A quick start was all the Brampton Battalion needed.
Cody Hodgson opened the scoring ten seconds into the game and Matt Duchene scored 32 seconds later as the Battalion rolled to a 7-2 win over the Belleville Bulls to take a two games to none lead in the Ontario Hockey League Eastern Conference final.
After Brampton's quick start, Nick Pageau scored on the power play at 3:05 to bring Belleville within one but Jason Dale restored the two-goal lead just 33 seconds later on an unassisted effort, chasing Bulls starting goaltender Mike Murphy from the game, having surrendered three goals on seven shots.
"The first two shifts were great for us," said Battalion head coach Stan Butler. "The crowd really gave us a boost."
"It was huge for us to get those first two early goals," said Duchene, who also added an assist. "It really set the tone for the rest of the game."
Philipp Grubauer came on in relief but was unable to prevent the Battalion from taking a 4-1 lead at 7:51 as Ken Peroff found the back of the net. Luke Pither brought the visitors to within one before the period's end but that's as close as they would get.
Evgeny Grachev scored a pair and Thomas Stajan added a single to round out the scoring. Brampton goalie Thomas McCollum stopped 20 of 22 shots for the win.
Game 3 is Sunday night in Belleville.
