Charles Coyle scored his ninth goal of the playoffs as the Saint John Sea Dogs completed a four-game first-round sweep of the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles with a 5-1 win in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoff action.

Coyle's nine goals in one playoff series are a club record.

Dany Potvin scored for Cape Breton, which was swept by the Sea Dogs for the second straight season.

Saint John scored 34 goals in the series, establishing a new team mark.

The Sea Dogs will face the Baie Comeau Drakkar in the second round. The 13th-ranked Drakkar advanced by beating Victoriaville 5-4 in overtime, completing a stunning sweep of the fourth-ranked Tigres.

Elsewhere in the QMJHL, it was: Shawinigan 6 Rouyn-Noranda 2; Rimouski 4 Val-d'Or 3; Blainville-Boisbriand 4 Gatineau 3 (OT); and Chicoutimi 4 Acadie-Bathurst 2.

At Sydney N.S., Mathieu Corbeil made 33 saves for the Sea Dogs while Philippe Trudeau stopped 26 shots for the Screaming Eagles.

Cape Breton opened the scoring when Potvin beat Corbeil at the 11-minute mark. The goal needed a video review as the net came off its moorings on the play.

Kelly tied it up on a shot from the right-wing circle at 15:03. The unassisted marker was the second of the playoffs for the Saint John native.

The Sea Dogs faced a two-man advantage for a 1:05 span early in the second period, but they killed both penalties, with Corbeil making a highlight-reel sliding cross-ice save to keep the score tied.

Saint John finished a perfect 7-for-7 on the penalty kill.

Coyle continued his scoring streak, powering around a defender on the left wing, cutting to the net and jamming it in to give the Sea Dogs the lead at 8:21 of the second period.

The Eagles outshot Saint John 13-12 in the second period and stayed within one until Jurco added the insurance marker on a rebound 3:06 into the third. Galiev and Phillips assisted on the goal.

The Sea Dogs scored again 11 seconds later as Galiev finished a feed from Jurco to make it 4-1 at 3:17.

Gauthier made it 5-1 on a power play, taking a no-look pass from Galiev behind the net.

The assist gave Galiev 58 career playoff points, a club record and the most among active players in the QMJHL.
