PRE-GAME REPORT

EDMONTON, AB - The latest test for the Oilers (3-2-0) comes tonight against league frontrunners and the Western Conference-leading Nashville Predators (6-1-0) in their second contest of a four-game homestand at Rogers Place.
The Blue and Orange made it three-straight wins after downing the Boston Bruins in their home opener on Thursday in overtime, with Leon Draisaitl finishing Connor McDavid's feed on the 2-on-1 for the game's winning goal 37 seconds into the extra frame.
A visit from the Predators continues a difficult stretch of games for the Oilers to begin the 2018-19 NHL season, facing seven of last season's playoff teams in 10 of their first 12 games during the month of October. The Predators have strung together a three-game win streak of their own after defeating the Calgary Flames 5-3 last night at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
"It's another good test," McDavid said. "We've been saying that a lot lately, though. It's a tough schedule coming up and we've had a few tough games. They won the President's Trophy last year and are another team that will threaten to go all the way."
Special teams contributions have proved timely for the Oilers as of late with their power play operating at 35.7 percent (5-for-14, third in the NHL) and the penalty kill earning a crucial stop with five minutes remaining against the Bruins with the score tied at two.
Winning the battle with the man advantage and disadvantage against a bottom-10 power play and penalty kill, along with coming out with a good start to the game against a Nashville team lacking star goaltender Pekka Rinne, remains a big focus for Oilers Head Coach Todd McLellan.
"They're often a team that gets better as the year goes on," McLellan said. "They have a very dynamic back-end, forwards that complement their defence, and it's a big test for us. I like to think our group will be prepared to play and swing the bat right away instead of wandering around the batter's box. We haven't done that in a few nights.
"In one-goal games, usually the special teams dictate the outcome, and the last three games we've been able to win the special teams battle and win the game as a result. That's how important they are."
Forward Kailer Yamamoto, fresh off scoring his first NHL goal in the victory, earns an opportunity on the top line against the Predators tonight alongside McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in the absence of Ty Rattie. Goaltender Cam Talbot earns his sixth-straight start in goal for the Oilers after making 27 saves on 29 shots against the Bruins.
YAMAMOTO PROMOTED
It was a memorable night for Yamamoto scoring his first NHL goal against the Bruins, and now opportunity awards the 20-year-old a chance to make an impression on the with no Rattie for the Oilers.

PRE-GAME RAW | Yamamoto 10.20.18

"It's special," Yamamoto said from the Oilers dressing room this afternoon. "Any time you can play with those two it's really special, and hopefully I can take advantage of it."
McDavid acknowledged his new linemate's work to cement his place in the roster while hoping to latch on to some of his confidence tonight against the high-flying Predators.
"He takes his chances," McDavid, who leads the Oilers with 11 points (4G, 7A) in five games, said. "He found a way to cash in last game which is good, and you hope it builds momentum for him. Once one goes in, the old saying in a bunch more will go in for him, so that's what we're hoping for.
"He's a reliable player, he's smart, works hard, does all the right things, so definitely he's someone who's gaining Todd's trust each and every day."
The nimble forward will test his ability against a Predators defensive top-four that lacks no quality with the likes of P.K. Subban, Roman Josi, Ryan Ellis and Mattias Ekholm.
"I think back to Boston who has Chara, perhaps the biggest player in the league, and [Yamamoto], who's one of the smaller ones, and how he went and battled against him for 120 minutes," McLellan said. "He didn't win all the battles, but he showed up for them and that's encouraging. Tonight, when you talk about facing the top-two defencemen, they've got a top-four that's as strong as anyone's top-two, so it doesn't matter. He's going to play against two good defencemen no matter what line he's on.
"He creates space for teammates, he holds on to pucks, and is one of our best retrieval players."
CHIASSON DEBUTS
After signing as a free agent this off-season on a one-year deal, forward Alex Chiasson earns his first regular-season appearance for the Oilers tonight after sitting out the first five games.
"It's been honestly quite a long three weeks for me, but I'm excited to be playing here with the guys," Chiasson said. "I've put in a lot of work here off the ice and also skating after practice to make sure I stay ready. It's exciting times and you always look forward to your first game of the season, so it should be good."

PRE-GAME RAW | Chiasson 10.20.18

Experience speaks for the 28-year-old, who's no stranger to high-pressure and intense games after winning a Stanley Cup last season with the Washington Capitals.
"I think being in my seventh year in the league and being in this situation before I'm not overly nervous as you can tell," the Montreal, Quebec native added. "I've been around and played in high-pressure games and I know how to prepare, so I'll be okay."
Not only will he draw in for the first time, but he'll be tasked with complementing Milan Lucic and Ryan Strome on the third line.
"[Lucic] has been around for a while and plays in straight lines and goes to the net, and Strome is a crafty player," Chiasson said. "I think for me I'll try to play a simple game. Just play a solid 60 minutes and see how it goes. It's been a while since I've played, but my body feels good right now."
LINEUP NOTES
Rattie is a notable omission for the Oilers after picking up a mid-body muscle issue during the second period against the Bruins that could keep the Airdrie, Alberta product out of the lineup for two to three weeks.
Drake Caggiula isn't ready for tonight, while Matt Benning remains on injured reserve after leaving in the first period against Boston and failing to return.

PRE-GAME RAW | McLellan 10.20.18.

"Rattie won't be playing tonight and will be unavailable for a couple weeks at least," McLellan said. "He pulled something, is hurting, and needs time to recover. Benning is on IR so he'll be out a week for sure, and Drake Caggiula is not ready to go."
Defenceman Jason Garrison replaces Benning in the lineup tonight and Kevin Gravel sits out after being called up from the Bakersfield Condors Friday afternoon. Despite his omittance from the blueline, McLellan sees Gravel in the future plans of the Oilers and as someone who will benefit from healthy competition on defence.
"[Gravel] got here late yesterday, he's going to watch the game tonight," McLellan said. "But he's up here to play. He's not here to sit and be a placeholder, so the other six defencemen in the lineup tonight have to perform at a high level to maintain their ice time or a roster position.
"Healthy competition has been good for our team. We've seen it with players going in and out of the lineup and up and down. If we have those players push each other, we'll be better for it."
