Preseason roundup: Kings cruise past Sharks

Justin Williams had a goal and two assists to lead the Los Angeles Kings to a 4-1 win against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Tuesday.

Drew Doughty, Dustin Brown and Dwight King also scored for Los Angeles and Anze Kopitar had two assists. Jonathan Quick stopped 16 of 17 shots through the first two periods before being replaced by Martin Jones, who made seven saves.

Joe Thornton scored 1:28 into the game for San Jose. Antti Niemi stopped 26 of 30 shots in the loss.

Flyers 4, Rangers 2: | WATCH HIGHLIGHTS | Matt Read had two assists and an empty-net goal and Wayne Simmonds contributed a goal and an assist to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a win against the New York Rangers at Wells Fargo Center. Sean Couturier and Nicklas Grossmann also scored for the Flyers, who were playing their third game in three nights.

Carl Hagelin scored a shorthanded goal for the Rangers 4:47 into the game, and 19-year-old Anthony Duclair made it 3-2 when he scored 36 seconds into the third period. Duclair has a goal in three consecutive games.

Ray Emery made 24 saves for the Flyers, who complete their preseason schedule Thursday at the Washington Capitals and open their regular season on the road against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 8.

Cam Talbot allowed three goals on 22 shots for the Rangers, who host the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday.

Islanders 5, Bruins 3: | WATCH HIGHLIGHTS | Cal Clutterbuck broke a 3-3 tie with 3:09 left in regulation to give the New York Islanders a preseason win against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden.

TJ Brennan, Kyle Okposo and Cory Conacher scored in the second period to help the Islanders take a 3-1 lead. Kevin Poulin stopped 26 of 29 shots.

Patrice Bergeron, Matt Bartkowski and Brad Marchand scored for the Bruins. Niklas Svedberg started in goal, stopped seven of eight shots, and was replaced halfway through the game by Jeremy Smith, who made 15 saves.

Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield scored an empty-net goal at 18:49 of the third period.

The teams play again on Friday in Bridgeport, Conn.

Blues 3, Hurricanes 1: | WATCH HIGHLIGHTS | Alexander Steen assisted on the go-ahead goal by Joakim Lindstrom in his preseason debut to help the St. Louis Blues to a victory against the Carolina Hurricanes at Scottrade Center.

Brian Elliott stopped 19 shots for St. Louis, which won for the first time in five preseason games.

Steen, who sat out the Blues' first two games and was held out of the next two for precautionary reasons following a minor injury sustained during a scrimmage, originally was credited with an unassisted goal at 18:38 of the second period, snapping a 1-1 tie. The goal was changed to Lindstrom after the game.

Vladimir Tarasenko gave the Blues a two-goal lead when he scored with 2:15 remaining.

David Backes gave the Blues a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal 33 seconds into the second period. Rookie defenseman Ryan Murphy's goal at 5:59 got the Hurricanes even.

Carolina's Cam Ward made 26 saves.

Jets 2, Senators 1: | WATCH HIGHLIGHTS | Ondrej Pavelec stopped 24 of 25 shots to lead the Winnipeg Jets past the Ottawa Senators in a preseason game at MTS Centre.

Jim Slater and Nikolaj Ehlers scored for the Jets, who lost their previous three preseason games. Winnipeg will visit the Calgary Flames on Thursday.

Buddy Robinson scored for Ottawa in the second period. Robin Lehner and Craig Anderson each allowed one goal; Lehner made 12 saves, and Anderson stopped 10 of 11 shots.

Lightning 5, Stars 1: The Tampa Bay Lightning got goals from five players to defeat the Dallas Stars in a preseason game for the second time in four days.

Cedric Paquette and Brett Connolly each had a goal and an assist for the Lightning, who hadn't played since defeating the Stars 6-3 at Tampa on Friday. Richard Panik, J.T. Brown and Nikita Kucherov also had goals for the visiting Lightning, and Ben Bishop made 21 saves playing the entire game.

Jamie Benn scored for the Stars, who don't play again until they open the regular season at home against the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 9.

Flames 2, Avalanche 0: Jonas Hiller stopped all 28 shots he faced to help the Calgary Flames defeat the Colorado Avalanche in a preseason game at Scotiabank Saddledome and complete a home-and-home sweep.

Calgary rookie Johnny Gaudreau scored 9:05 into the second period, and Hiller, who signed a two-year contract with the Flames this summer, made the one-goal lead stand up until Lance Bouma hit the empty net in the final minute.

Calgary won 2-1 at Colorado on Sunday.

Reto Berra made 22 saves for Colorado, which is 0-4-1 in the preseason and has games Thursday and Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings.
