Power Rankings: Top 17 Moments of 2017

Whatever your feelings are about the year, there's no denying it's been an eventful 2017 for the Sharks. From historic milestones to awards to heartwarming events, there are many great memories made and shared by the San Jose Sharks this past year.
As it is the final Friday of 2017 - and therefore the final Power Rankings of 2017 - it's the perfect time for sjsharks.com to look back at the year that was and rank the top 17 moments of the year.

17. Playing Through Injuries

A slapshot to the face, destroying most of his teeth. An awkward hit into the boards, tearing both the ACL and MCL. Logan Couture and Joe Thornton suffered injuries that would sideline most players, but the two aren't most players. Both played through the pain in the playoffs, and not only playing, but were thriving.
16. Hockey Fights Cancer Night with Tyler

The Sharks first met Tyler in January 2016 at their annual Capes4Heroes event, giving special superhero capes to pediatric cancer patients. Almost two years later, Tyler was back to drop the puck for the Sharks Hockey Fight Cancer Night to celebrate one year in remission.
15. Tank In The Tank - Tanked Episode

SAP Center has been known as the Shark Tank for years, the only thing left to really put the cherry on top was to actually add a shark tank to the arena. And in 2017, they did, with help from the Animal Planet show Tanked.

Usually fights are characterized by dropped gloves and flying fists. But sometimes, as demonstrated in a viral moment by Brenden Dillon, they also include the combatants making summer plans.
13. #Jumbo1000 and #Marleau500

Drafted first and second overall in 1997, it was fitting that these two would both reach historic milestones barely a month apart. On February 2, Patrick Marleau scored his 500th goal, all recorded in teal. And on March 6, Joe Thornton managed to join even more rarified air by becoming only the 13th player in NHL history to record 1,000 assists.
12. Santa Rosa Guns and Hoses

In 2017, the North Bay Area was hit by one of the most devastating wildfires in the history of the United States. The Sharks Alumni Foundation decided to step in and put on a charity hockey game at the Snoopy Rink in Santa Rosa, bringing out a group of Sharks alumni to take on the Guns and Hoses hockey team.
11. Dog Drops Puck

Everything is better with dogs. That theory was proven when companion dog Lake and her owner Danny McHale dropped the puck in what later became an adorably viral moment.
10. Sharks For Life Commercials Emmy

You cheer for us, we cheer for you. That simple premise launched a series of commercials featuring Sharks players cheering on fans. From spelling bees to building a playhouse to life guards to barbershops, all the commercials delivered. Including, as it turned out, a Northern California Emmy for a commercial campaign, the first such award for SJ Sharks Productions.
9. Sharks Foundation Recognized as a Top 50 Corporate Philanthropist
For years, the Sharks Foundation has helped give back to community through their many events, grants, and fundraisers. In 2017, they were recognized as the 18th best corporate philanthropist in Silicon Valley by the Silicon Valley Business Journal, and only one of two professional sports teams to be recognized.
8. Joe Thornton signs contract on lawn mower

After official hitting free agency on July 1, future hall-of-famer Joe Thornton decided to re-up with the Sharks for another year. And he did it in a hall-of-fame way.
7. 7-0 Playoff Win

A 7-0 win would likely make a best of 2017 list on its own merits. But a 7-0 win in the playoffs? Well, it definitely cannot be left off.
6. Tree-mendous Sharks Holiday

The Sharks are well known for their hilarious holiday videos. And this season was no different, though SJ Sharks Productions did switch it up a bit. Instead of having the players show off their acting chops, the holiday video was an animated tale about the power of teamwork - and a good montage.
5. Martin Jones Shuts Out Kings for 100th Win

There's always something a little sweeter about beating the team that traded you away. Also sweet: beating the Kings. And Martin Jones did both for his 100th career win, shutting out the team that traded him away.
4. Northern California Special Olympics Floor Hockey Game

In what has become an annual event, the San Jose Sharks organization went all-out hosting a floor hockey game for a pair of Northern California Special Olympic teams. The entire Sharks coaching staff, as well as more than a few players, gameday staff, S.J. Sharkie, the giant Shark Head, and some fans came together to pull off this incredible event.
3. Marleau's Return

After spending his entire career with the Sharks after being drafted by the organization in 1997, Patrick Marleau chose to depart in free agency to the Toronto Maple Leafs. October 30 was the first time Marleau returned, and Sharks fans didn't disappoint, giving the franchise leader in games and goals a several minute standing ovation that had to be cut off to start the game.

There are few players in the league who enjoy being shirtless more than Joe Thornton. And there's no more iconic duo than Joe Thornton and Brent Burns. Therefore, it was only a matter of time that the two grace the pages of ESPN's annual Body Issue, showing off their hockey bods (and performance enhanced beards) to the sporting world.
1. Brent Burns Wins the Norris

He led his position in goals. He led his position in points. He provided solid shot blocking, breakout passes, and defending. In a word, he was one of the most dynamic players in the league.
And so in June, Brent Burns was awarded his first Norris Trophy for best defenseman in the league, which was also the first time a Sharks defenseman has won that honor.
