WSH@TOR: Kadri propels Leafs with fifth career hatty

The 2018-19 season has experienced a plethora of offense entering the
2019 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend
.

* A total of 4,713 goals (including 43 in the shootout) have been scored at the All-Star break, the most through 770 games since 2005-06 (4,787). That season ended with 7,588 goals, most in NHL history.
* Sixty-four games have had at least 10 combined goals (including shootout-deciding goals), the highest total at the break since 1995-96 (75). Teams have scored at least seven goals in one game 55 times (including the shootout). The last time a season had that many at the break was 1995-96 (65).
That includes breaks for the Winter Olympics in 1997-98, 2001-02, 2005-06, 2009-10 and 2013-14.
* Four players have scored at least 30 goals (Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin, 37; Buffalo Sabres forward Jeff Skinner, 30; Toronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares, 30; and Tampa Bay Lightning center Brayden Point, 30), the highest total at the break since 2009-10 (eight). * The 2018-19 season has had 61 hat tricks, including at least one in 10 of the past 13 days since Jan. 11. That's the most after 770 games since 1995-96 (62).
* There have been 345 comeback wins this season, the most after 770 games in NHL history. A team has rallied from down multiple goals to win 96 times. Two NHL seasons have had more through 770 games: 1985-86 (112) and 1987-88 (98).

Kadri hat trick lifts Maple Leafs

Center Nazem Kadri had a four-point game and the fifth hat trick of his NHL career for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 6-3 win against the Washington Capitals at Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday. The Maple Leafs (30-17-2, 62 points) are second in the Atlantic Division, 14 points behind the Tampa Bay Lightning, and reached 30 wins in 49 or fewer games for the second time in their history. Toronto was 30-14-4 after 48 games in 1934-35.
Morgan Rielly had two assists to become the fifth defenseman in Maple Leafs history to reach 50 points in consecutive seasons and first since Tomas Kaberle did it in three straight (2005-06 to 2007-08). Three Toronto defensemen have required fewer games to reach 50 points in a season: Borje Salming in 1976-77 (42 games), Babe Pratt in 1943-44 (44) and Bryan McCabe in 2005-06 (45).
Rielly (50 points; 13 goals, 37 assists) is third among defensemen in scoring behind Brent Burns of the San Jose Sharks (55 points; nine goals, 46 assists) and Mark Giordano of the Calgary Flames (52 points; 11 goals, 41 assists).
The Capitals have lost seven straight games (0-5-2) for the first time since Jan. 12-24, 2014 (0-5-2) despite Ovechkin getting his 1,179th point to tie Sergei Fedorov for the most in NHL history by a Russia-born player.

Canadiens take over third in Atlantic

Carey Price made 30 saves to help the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Bell Centre and move past the Boston Bruins for third place in the Atlantic Division, one point behind the second-place Maple Leafs and 15 behind the first-place Lightning.
Price is 4-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average, .971 save percentage and one shutout in his past four starts since Jan. 12, and 20-13-4 with a 2.56 GAA, .915 save percentage and three shutouts this season. He's a 20-game winner for the ninth time in his NHL career, tied with Jacques Plante and Patrick Roy for most in Canadiens history, and eight wins from tying Plante (314) for most in Montreal history.
