Playoff seeding on line for Flames against Jets

by Patrick Williams /

FLAMES (45-29-7) at JETS (42-26-13)

Season series: The Calgary Flames won their first two games against the Winnipeg Jets. The Flames won 5-2 at Scotiabank Saddledome in the most recent game Feb. 2. Calgary forward Mason Raymond has two goals and two assists. Calgary goaltender Jonas Hiller is 2-0-0 with a 1.51 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage. Jets forward Blake Wheeler has a goal and two assists.

Flames team scope: Calgary clinched at least third place in the Pacific Division and will play the Vancouver Canucks in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs next week. A win in any fashion and a Vancouver Canucks loss would give the Flames home ice advantage. The Flames recalled defensemen Brett Kulak and John Ramage and forwards Emile Poirier and David Wolf from Adirondack of the American Hockey League on an emergency basis Friday, so coach Bob Hartley may rest some of his players. Poirier, the Flames' first-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, has played five NHL games this season and has one assist. He has 17 goals in 51 AHL games this season. Each of the other three players could make his NHL debut Saturday. Center Sam Bennett, the fourth pick in the 2014 Draft, could also make his NHL debut.

Jets team scope: Winnipeg is guaranteed the second wild card spot from the Western Conference and will play the Anaheim Ducks or the St. Louis Blues in the first round of the playoffs. Defenseman Dustin Byfuglien can play after serving a four-game suspension for cross-checking, and defenseman Toby Enstrom will return from an upper-body injury, CBC said. The Jets recalled goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from St. John’s of the AHL on Friday; he will back up Michael Hutchinson, who will start Saturday, according to the Jets website. Goalie Ondrej Pavelec, who has started 12 of the past 13 games, will not dress. There could be other changes to the lineup. "I'm going to take the guys out [of the lineup] that I think can get better by not playing," Maurice said. He also said forward Mathieu Perreault will not play Saturday after he sustained a lower-body injury in the Jets' 1-0 shootout loss on the road against the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday.
