Jarry gets 30th win, Penguins defeat Blues in shootout

ST. LOUIS -- Tristan Jarry made 23 saves to reach 30 wins for the first time in his NHL career, and the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the St. Louis Blues 3-2 in a shootout at Enterprise Center on Thursday.

Jarry, who is 30-12-6 this season, is the first Penguins goalie with 30 wins since Matt Murray had 32 in 2016-17 and the fourth in their history, joining Marc-Andre Fleury (eight times), Tom Barrasso (twice) and Murray (once).
"It's cool," Jarry said. "It's something you don't really think about when it happens, but it's pretty cool when it happens. It's like a little milestone, but I think there's still a lot of work to do and games to be played. I hope to have a lot more."
Penguins center Sidney Crosby had his 10-game point streak end (13 points; six goals, seven assists).
Chad Ruhwedel and Mike Matheson scored for Pittsburgh (37-16-9), which tied the Tampa Bay Lightning for most road wins with 20.
Bryan Rust scored the only goal in the fourth round of the shootout, and Jarry did not allow a goal on four attempts.
"I thought our guys played hard tonight," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. "I thought tonight we were the better team for the most part. Give St. Louis credit. They pushed back in the end of the second and in the third. The most encouraging part was when they tied it up, it didn't affect us. We got right back to work."

David Perron scored for the fifth straight game, and Ville Husso made 43 saves for St. Louis (34-17-9), which has lost six of eight (2-3-3).
"We'll take any points we can get, but at the same time, that wasn't our best effort," Blues forward Brandon Saad said. "It's good to get a point, but it's something we need to correct."
Ruhwedel gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead at 14:42 of the first period, scoring on a one-timer from the blue line through traffic following an offensive zone face-off win.
Pittsburgh helped itself by killing off a 5-on-3 Blues power-play for 1:34, which began in the first minute of the game.
"That was huge," Rust said. "Things could go south very quickly if we don't get it done there. Everyone did a good job. Jarry made some big saves. Kind of from there, we just gained momentum. I think we were pretty good from there throughout the whole game."
Matheson made it 2-0 at 10:52 of the second period on a wrist shot from the left face-off dot to the glove side of Husso.
"I think we did a good job of being up all night and controlling the momentum by having our 'D' up in the zone and keeping pucks alive," Matheson said. "That's when we're at our best. It allowed our forwards to wear down their 'D' and allowed us to play our game."

Perron made it 2-1 at 16:55, making a power move past Matheson and waiting out Jarry before roofing a wrist shot.
"My first thought was I can't cut to the middle and take the chance that I turn it over, because I think all four of our guys were pretty tired on the ice," Perron said. "So that was my first thought. I was going to take it hard to the outside of the net. If [Matheson] closes me off, good, then I was going to maybe even take it behind the net. But I kind of saw an opening and was able to come across the crease. When you do that, a lot of times if you just elevate over a pad you have a really good chance to score. It worked. That was a big goal for us at the time, too. Just gave us a little bit of energy."
Ivan Barbashev tied it 2-2 at 1:49 of the third period when he tapped in Saad's backhand pass through the crease.
"Just making a read and we ended up losing the face-off," Saad said. "I kind of hunted it down and made a good play and 'Barby' finished it off for me."

After Jarry made a save on Blues center Ryan O'Reilly in the shootout, Rust came in with speed and beat Husso under the glove and over the left pad.
"I have a similar thought process pretty much every time I go out there," Rust said. "There's a few things I look for. I pick my spot and score."
NOTES:Rust is 3-for-3 in shootout attempts this season and 5-for-5 in his NHL career. ... Blues forward Pavel Buchnevich played 23:18 and had three shots on goal after missing three games in concussion protocol. ... Perron has seven points (six goals, one assist) in a five-game point streak and has scored nine goals in his past eight games.
