Schenn gets hat trick, Flyers defeat Flames

PHILADELPHIA -- Brayden Schenn got his first NHL hat trick, and Claude Giroux had four assists to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-3 win against the Calgary Flames at Wells Fargo Center on Monday.
Michal Neuvirth made 29 saves in his fourth consecutive start for the Flyers (29-22-11), who have won three in a row and four of their past five.
The Flames (26-32-4) have lost five straight and eight of nine.

Schenn, who can become a restricted free agent July 1, had an NHL career-high nine shots on goal. He completed the hat trick when he scored his 21st goal to give Philadelphia a 4-1 lead with 1:29 left in the second period.
It was the first Flyers hat trick at home since Scott Hartnell's on Jan. 22, 2012.

"I've had a few two-goal games in my career and had a hat trick taken away from me last year, so to finally get one means a lot," Schenn said. "It's even more rewarding when it comes in a win and we get the two points. If I got the hat trick and we lost the game there in the third period, it would have been a different feeling."
Schenn's third goal of the night came on the power play. From the corner, Giroux made a cross-ice pass to defenseman Mark Streit, who centered to Schenn in front for a tap-in goal through Calgary goalie Jonas Hiller's legs.
"They executed well on a couple of plays, and we had some breakdowns," Calgary coach Bob Hartley said. "They made us pay."
The Flyers needed all of that 4-1 cushion in the third period.
Calgary, which moved defenseman Kris Russell and forward David Jones on Monday before the 2016 NHL Trade Deadline, cut the Philadelphia lead to 4-2 at 10:17 of the third period when Micheal Ferland scored on a rebound. Fifty seconds later, a Michael Frolik shot snuck through Neuvirth to get the Flames within a goal.

"It's a tough day," Flames captain Mark Giordano said. "You try to go through your routine as much as possible. You sort of always have one ear opened and you're listening to what's going on.
"Our will was there, our compete was there. And in the third, when it would have been easy to just pack it in, I thought we generated a lot and got a lot of good looks. I'm proud of the guys for that."
Philadelphia coach Dave Hakstol used his timeout after the Frolik goal, and the Flyers hung on down the stretch, with Wayne Simmonds scoring an empty-net goal with 36.1 seconds left.
It was Simmonds' second goal of the game and 23rd of the season. He put the Flyers ahead 2-1 4:47 into the second period with a wrist shot off of a pass from Giroux, who patiently waited for Simmonds to get into a shooting position in the slot.
Calgary opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 6:07 of the first period with Flyers forward Michael Raffl in the penalty box for hooking. Sean Monahan got loose in the slot and put a one-timer past Neuvirth for his 20th goal.

Johnny Gaudreau, a Carneys Point, N.J., native playing in front of a large group of family and friends, extended his point streak to eight games with an assist on the Monahan goal.
Schenn scored his first goal at 12:25 of the first to tie it 1-1. His second goal, at 15:27 of the second, made it 3-1.
Schenn's 21 goals are an NHL career-high. He scored 20 in 82 games in 2013-14.
"Tonight, he did one of the things he does best: score goals," Hakstol said. "He did that tonight. For him, the indicators for him early in games, and I'm sure he knows it, his feet are moving, he's got some physicality to his game. When he's into the game that way on the first couple of shifts, usually it carries over into a good night offensively."
"Brayden had a lot of opportunities to score," Giroux said. "He's got that talent to be able to score goals from everywhere. He's a smart player and he's getting better and better every day."
Forward Jakub Voracek will miss approximately two weeks because of a lower-body injury, the Flyers said earlier Monday.
