Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere will host members of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School hockey team at BB&T Center on Sunday when the Flyers visit the Florida Panthers.
A Feb. 14 shooting at the school in Parkland, Florida, killed 17 students and faculty members and injured 14 others. On Feb. 25, the boys' hockey team won 7-4 against Jesuit High School in the state championship game.
Gostisbehere attended Douglas for two years, but never played on the hockey team.
"The way they handled themselves was pretty cool to see," Gostisbehere told Philly.com. "Obviously the circumstances were a little rough. And what they did with their medals, bringing [them] to the school for the memorial, was pretty cool. They handled themselves like adults. It was pretty cool to see."
Gostisbehere will spend time with the team before the game.
"It will definitely be cool to see them, and to get their minds off everything they're going through and hopefully have some fun for a few hours," he said.
Tickets were provided by the Florida Panthers Foundation.
