Petersen leads Aeros to 2-1 shootout victory over Toronto Marlies @NHLdotcom

TORONTO - Nick Petersen scored in the shootout to earn the Houston Aeros a 2-1 win over the Toronto Marlies in an American Hockey League game Monday afternoon.

Petersen beat Marlies goalie Drew MacIntyre in the fifth round of the shootout for the winning goal.

Houston's Matt Hackett stopped 26 shots for his 17th win of the season.

Mike Zigomanis had an opportunity to end it with less than a minute remaining in overtime but put his shot over the net.

The Marlies (26-17-5) picked up the physical play in the third and it seemed to inject life into the game.

Chad Rau opened the scoring just over nine minutes into the third when his wrist shot from the slot beat MacIntyre.

But Toronto's Tim Connolly forced overtime with just over five minutes remaining in regulation.

Justin Fontaine and Chay Genoway almost scored in the second for Houston (27-19-7) but both put their shots off the post.

Toronto had an excellent chance to open the scoring in the first with a two-man power play for 1:32. Ryan Hamilton fired a Joe Colborne pass but Hackett got a pad on it. Then Connolly beat Hackett with his point shot but the puck went off the post.
