Another summer day and another restricted free agent scratched off the Jets' list. The team announced on Wednesday the signing of 2013 second-round pick Nic Petan to a one-year, two-way contract worth $874,125 in the NHL.
"It's awesome. It's been a great summer so far and it's nice to finally sign, and I'm excited to be back with the Jets," the 23-year-old said from his summer home in Vancouver.
"Obviously, I've been in contact with my agent over the past few weeks and just got the call a few days ago. So, it's definitely an exciting time and I'm happy to be back."

The 2017-18 season was Petan's best statistical year as pro, registering a point per game with 15 goals and 37 assists in 52 AHL contests. The centre also suited up in 15 NHL games this past season, notching two goals. With Paul Stastny leaving the team via free agency, a spot down the middle is up for grabs when training camp opens in September - a hole Petan is hoping to fill.

"I think the all-around game is getting better and it's still getting better as every year goes on," Petan said. "I think the biggest thing from last year is the confidence went up. I think my game is at a high and I'm more than ready to make the step."
While he feels his game on the ice is rounding into form, Petan has been putting in the work this summer to ensure he begins the 2018-19 campaign on the right foot.
"Just a lot of on-ice, off-ice, the regular training; a lot of movement things and things that help you get quicker, faster, stronger. I know it's cliche to say, but it's obviously a lot of hard work putting into another upcoming season."
When his AHL season ended in the second round of the Calder Cup Playoffs earlier this year, Petan along with several other Moose players were recalled to the Jets to serve as the team's 'black aces.' While the forward didn't suit up in any Stanley Cup Playoff games, watching Winnipeg's exciting run fuelled his drive to be on the ice with the big club next season.
"Obviously you want to be a part of that, but you know, you take it as motivation and you know you want to be a part of it this coming year," Petan said.
Now that Petan is under contract to return to Winnipeg next season, the Delta, BC product has some decisions to make away from the ice. Earlier this summer, Petan's roomates, Chase De Leo along with his 'Instagram famous' pooch, Chase J.R, were traded to the Anaheim Ducks. While Petan wishes the pair all the best in California, the times spent with little 'CJ' will be missed.

"Just lots of laughs around the house, it kept both of us busy and it was tons of fun."
