Also, in honor of NHL Green Month and the organization's commitment to environmental sustainability, Sunday's game is being powered by 100% renewable energy provided by the Penguins and the Penguins Foundation.
The Penguins organization has also purchased enough water to counterbalance the water used during Sunday's game.
The NHL's league-wide Green Month program calls attention to its member clubs being environmentally responsible. The Penguins have an ongoing commitment to the cause, as their arena was the first sports facility in North America to be LEED Gold Certified with the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design certification program. Since the facility opened in 2010, it has provided a positive impact on our region and everyone who attends its events.
PPG Paints Arena has served as a model for many of the NHL's latest arenas and continues to invest in sustainability initiatives. In addition, the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry was designed with similar design attributes that have realized cost savings related to lowered energy consumption and accessing utility rebates during high electricity demand times.
The Penguins continue to be stewards of sustainable construction, earning LEED ND (New Development) certification during redevelopment of the former Civic Arena site. This is the first development in the City of Pittsburgh to receive the designation.
