Ray Shero, who helped assemble the Pittsburgh Penguins' 2009 Stanley Cup championship team, agreed Monday to a five-year contract extension that will keep him with the club through the 2015-16 season.

"This was an easy decision," co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle said in a joint statement. "Ray has done a tremendous job with our hockey operation -- not only leading us to the Stanley Cup in 2009 but also building a team that can continue to compete for the Cup year after year."

Shero was hired May 25, 2006, and quickly built a team that went to the Stanley Cup Final in 2008 and won the Cup in 2009.

Along the way, he's signed the core of the Penguins to long-term deals -- Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Jordan Staal and Marc-Andre Fleury. He's also shown the ability to pull off big trades, acquiring Marian Hossa, Chris Kunitz and Bill Guerin.
