The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Monday that Mike Bales, the team's goaltending development coach, has been promoted to goaltending coach and will work on Dan Byslma's staff.

Bales, 42, replaces Gilles Meloche, who announced his retirement from the position in June after seven seasons on the job.

Bales had been the club's goaltender development coach the previous two seasons, when he was responsible for working with the organization's goaltending prospects. He assisted in scouting and evaluation of amateur goaltenders.

One highlight of his work came last season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Bales helped their goalies, Jeff Zatkoff and Brad Thiessen, combine to allow the fewest goals in the American Hockey League (178).
