PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Sergei Gonchar will have surgery on his disclocated shoulder Thursday and miss four to six months of the upcoming season.
The Penguins say Gonchar will have arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage and ligament damage to his left shoulder. Gonchar was hurt during the team's preseason opener against Tampa Bay Sept. 20 and had hoped to rehab the shoulder without surgery.
The 34-year-old Gonchar had 12 goals and 53 assists last season for 65 points, second among NHL defencemen.
The Penguins also expect to be without their other top offensive defenceman, Ryan Whitney, until at least January. Whitney had surgery to correct a chronic problems with a misaligned bone in his left foot.
