Penguins' Gonchar out 4 to 6 months with surgery @NHLdotcom

PITTSBURGH (AP) -Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Sergei Gonchar will have surgery on his disclocated shoulder Thursday and miss at least the first four months of the upcoming season.

The Penguins said in a statement that Gonchar will have arthroscopic surgery to repair cartilage and ligament damage to his left shoulder. Gonchar was hurt during the team's preseason opener against Tampa Bay on Sept. 20 and had hoped to rehab the shoulder without surgery.

The 34-year-old Gonchar had 12 goals and 53 assists last season for 65 points, second among NHL defensemen.
