Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was named captain for Canada at the 2015 IIHF World Championship, Hockey Canada announced Thursday.

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis and Dallas Stars center Jason Spezza were named alternate captains.

Crosby also was captain for Canada at the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

It's Crosby's first time playing for Canada at the Worlds since 2006, following his rookie NHL season. He led that tournament with eight goals and 16 points in nine games and was named the tournament's best forward.

Canada plays its first game Friday against Latvia at O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic. The World Championship runs May 1-17.
