PITTSBURGH-- Zach Aston-Reese needs surgery on a broken jaw after the Pittsburgh Penguins forward was hit by Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson in the second period of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Second Round at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday.

Aston-Reese also sustained a concussion on the play during a 4-3 loss and is expected to miss the remainder of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said.

"We just have to stay focused," Sullivan said. "As far as we're concerned, all we can do is control what's within our power and that's our focus on the game. So that's where our focus will be."
The 23-year-old rookie left at 9:47 of the second period after being hit nine seconds earlier.
After crossing the blue line near the Washington bench, Aston-Reese was hit by Wilson and fell to the ice. He went to the locker room holding his mouth. Wilson was not penalized; he later had an assist on the tying goal by Matt Niskanen at 5:06 of the third period before Alex Ovechkin scored the game-winner with 1:07 remaining.

"Tom is, obviously he's a big body (6-foot-4, 218 pounds). He's tremendously strong and he hits hard," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "My first look at the hit and both guys are bracing for it. They're shoulder to shoulder. He just blew through him. … To me, it was a hard hockey hit. So if you want my opinion, that's what it is, shoulder to shoulder."
Aston-Reese (6-foot, 204), who had one assist in eight playoff games, played third-line left wing with center Riley Sheahan and right wing Phil Kessel. Forward Carter Rowney could return to the Penguins lineup after being a healthy scratch Tuesday, or rookie forward Daniel Sprong could make his NHL playoff debut.
"I think our team showed character," Pittsburgh defenseman Kris Letang said. "We showed emotion. I think it was great. We answered back with big body checks. I think our answer was great."
Penguins defenseman Brian Dumoulin played 19:59 in Game 3 after leaving Game 2 in the second period when he collided with Wilson and Ovechkin.
