DENVER - Patrick Roy has turned down an offer to become the head coach of the Colorado Avalanche.

Roy phoned Avalanche president Pierre Lacroix late Tuesday night to tell him he wasn't accepting the team's offer to become head coach due to family reasons, a spokeswoman for the junior league club Roy co-owns and coaches told The Associated Press.

Roy will stay with the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he also the club's general manager.

A news conference was scheduled for later Wednesday in Quebec City to announce Roy is staying with the Remparts.
