SAGINAW, Mich. - Jake Paterson made 41 saves, earning the game's first star, as the Saginaw Spirit defeated the visiting Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds 4-1 on Saturday in Ontario Hockey League action.
Carlos Amestoy scored twice for the Spirit (30-27-8), who sit sixth in the Western Conference, while Garret Ross and Josh Shalla had a goal apiece.
Eric Locke and Daulton Young chipped in with two assists each.
Darnell Nurse scored the lone goal for the Greyhounds (27-32-6), who are ninth in the West and one point out of the final playoff position.
Matt Murray allowed three goals on five shots before being pulled just six minutes into the game.
Jack Cambell stopped all 23 shots he faced in relief.
Saginaw went 1 for 3 on the power play as Sault Ste. Marie failed to score on any of their three chances with the man adavantage.
With the victory, the Spirit became the sixth team in the West to clinch a playoff position.
