Pasquale's 39 saves lift Saginaw to 5-2 stunner over Brampton @NHLdotcom

The Saginaw Spirit used a trademark defensive effort to snuff out the Brampton Battalion's franchise-best hot streak.

Edward Pasquale turned aside 39 shots as the Spirit earned a 5-2 win over Brampton in OHL action Thursday night, halting the Battalion's 19-game point streak.

Pasquale was at his best in a frantic third period, where he stopped 16 of 17 shots as the Battalion pressed for the tying goal. The Sting, who entered the game tied for second in the league in fewest goals against, bent but didn't break against the powerhouse Battalion en route to their second straight victory.

Trailing 3-1 after two periods, Brampton closed to within one on Kyle Pereira's second goal of the season at 5:34. Mitch Fillman restored Sarnia's two-goal advantage at 9:52, and Kyle Bochek iced the victory for the Sting (17-8-0-1) with an empty netter in the final minute.

The loss ended a remarkable run for the Battalion (20-7-1-0), who hadn't lost in regulation since a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Sudbury Wolves on Oct. 11. Brampton won 16 games in a row following the Sudbury game - a franchise record - before dropping a 6-5 overtime decision to the Niagara IceDogs on Nov. 27.
