Panthers tap fired St. Louis coach as assistant @NHLdotcom

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -The Florida Panthers hired former St. Louis head coach Mike Kitchen as an assistant coach Monday.

He will focus on the Panthers' defensive players.

The Blues fired Kitchen in December after a seven-game losing streak that dropped the franchise to the bottom of the NHL standings. He had been head coach for St. Louis since 2004, and was an assistant beginning in 1998.

Before that, Kitchen spent nine seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
