The Florida Panthers signed a multi-year agreement to move their American Hockey League affiliation to Springfield, Mass. starting with the 2016-17 season.

The Panthers' AHL affilaite has been in Portland, Maine.

Springfield was the AHL affiliate of the Arizona Coyotes last season before moving to Tucson, Ariz., last week.

AHL hockey in Springfield dates to 1936 when the Springfield Indians were chosen as one of the league's eight flagship members.

"Springfield is a charter member of the American Hockey League and a proud hockey market where fans will give our players the support and encouragement they need to develop into National Hockey League players," said Panthers assistant general manager Eric Joyce, who will serve as Springfield's GM. "Development is incumbent on winning, and therefore our roster will include exciting players from top to bottom."
