Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik has successful surgery on Friday to repair a sports hernia. The team says he’ll need a month to six weeks of rehabilitation but is expected to be ready for the start of training camp in September.

Orpik played with the injury during the second half of the season, including the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he was a member of the United States’ silver medal-winning team.
A sports hernia occurs when there is a weakening of the muscles or tendon in the lower abdomen.
