He's in.
Just over two years after the Predators selected him in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft, forward Philip Tomasino will make his NHL debut tonight in Nashville as the Preds host the Seattle Kraken at Bridgestone Arena.
As one might imagine, Tomasino admits he has some nerves, but he'll try to keep things as simple as possible while treating this like any other game.
Except there's just a bit more to it.
"It's what you dream of since you've been a kid," Tomasino grinned on Thursday morning. "It's been a whirlwind last couple of days here, and I couldn't really sleep last night, so the emotions are kicking in pretty high. I'm really excited, and it's going to be a long day until we get on the ice here, but I think just overall it's been awesome. To get this experience has been cool, but I think once you're on the ice, you forget about all that…and try to play hockey and play your game. It's going to be really fun."
Tomasino got the news Monday that he had made the roster, and Predators Head Coach John Hynes later informed the 20-year-old he would also be in the lineup tonight, an exchange that was appreciated by the bench boss, too.
"He earned it, he deserved it and he's a really good player," Hynes said. "[He had a] good training camp, good substance to his game, and we announced it today with the team on the ice and they gave him some stick taps. When you think about it, it's a special thing… This is the only time you ever get a first game, and I think it's really special for him, his family, for the team, and those are the more enjoyable meetings that you can have as coaches."
Tomasino's parents will be in attendance tonight in Nashville, one more added perk for the jovial rookie, and simply put, he can't wait to realize a lifelong dream of playing a game in the best hockey league in the world.
"It's going to be a really cool feeling for all of us," Tomasino said. "I know they're really excited, and I'm really excited as well, just to be able to play in front of all the fans. I haven't gotten a chance to play a regular-season game, so that's going to be really cool. [There will be a] lot of emotions, but I'm looking forward to it and it's going to be a lot of fun for everyone here."
