As the quarterfinals of the men's hockey tournament at the 2014 Sochi Olympics took center stage Wednesday, rooting interests ran across national lines.
St. Louis Blues defenseman Ian Cole, a native of Ann Arbor, Mich., tweeted a photo of himself wearing a T-shirt with the USA shield crest while Nashville Predators forward Eric Nystrom, born in Syosset, N.Y., also tweeted his support for the U.S. in its game against the Czech Republic.
Colorado Avalanche forward Matt Duchene was a healthy scratch for Canada's game against Latvia, but wrote on his Twitter feed that he "Will be cheerin loud from the stands! Let's get er done."
There also was support for the Canadian women's team, which will play the United States in the gold-medal game Thursday (Noon ET, NBC, CBC), from St. Louis Blues prospect Jake Allen. The goaltender directed a tweet towards women's team standouts Natalie Spooner, Shannon Szabados, Rebecca Johnston and Genevieve Lacasse.
