Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse was one of four players assigned to Bakersfield of the American Hockey League on Wednesday.
"Darnell has to play a lot, lead that team, so when he gets the call, and he will, he'll be ready," coach Todd McLellan said in comments tweeted by the Oilers.
Nurse, the seventh pick in the 2013 NHL Draft, was minus-1 in three preseason games. He had 10 goals and 33 points in 36 games last season for Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League.
Defenseman Martin Gernat and forwards Mitchell Moroz and Iiro Pakarinen also were sent to Bakersfield. The Oilers' training-camp roster is at 28 players.
