The Edmonton Oilers will be without forward Ales Hemsky for about a week due to a foot injury.
The Oilers said Friday that Hemsky will miss time as he recovers from a foot injury he has been trying to play through. Hemsky has nine goals and 20 points in 38 games.
"I decided to play with the injury and I don't want to make any excuses but it's been a struggle. I was in a lot of pain," Hemsky told the media, adding that the injury stems from blocking a shot against the Detroit Red Wings last month. "I will take a week without playing and try to regroup and get ready for next week hopefully."
Coach Ralph Krueger said, "Due to the fact that it's actually gotten worse on him, it's time for a break. He was showing a lot of courage. He was there for the team and he wanted to play -- kudos to him for trying to play through it. He's reached a point where we need to take a step back."
The Oilers are 12th in the Western Conference, five points back of Detroit for the eighth playoff spot, with eight games remaining. Edmonton plays the Calgary Flames on Saturday night.
