OHL Roundup: A look at Wednesday's games @NHLdotcom

Missing their number one goalie, the Plymouth Whalers have found security in backup Matt Mahalak.

Mahalak stopped 29 shots as his Whalers shut out the Saginaw Spirit 5-0 on Wednesday in Ontario Hockey League action.

Mahalak has filled in as Plymouth's starter while Scott Wedgewood is away with Canada at the world junior hockey championship.

In Wedgewood's absence, Mahalak has won four straight games and after Wednesday's shutout, finds himself top three in the league for goals-against-average, save percentage and shutouts.

Stefan Noesen scored two goals and an assist for the Whalers (26-9-3), Garrett Meurs had a goal and two assists while Alex Aleardi and Chris Albertini scored a goal apiece.

Spirit (16-20-2) goalie Jake Paterson allowed three goals against on 10 shots before being pulled at the end of the first period.

Clint Windsor stopped 22-of-24 shots in relief over the final two periods.

Power play's weren't a factor as Plymouth went 0 for 2 with the man advantage and never took a penalty all game.

Elsewhere in the OHL, it was: Oshawa 4, Belleville 1; London 6, Sault Ste. Marie 1; and Sudbury 5, Barrie 3.

At Saginaw, Mich., Albertini and Noesen scored 11 seconds apart to give the Whalers a 2-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.

Aleardi added one more at 12:42 to make it 3-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Noesen scored his second of the game at 18:10 of the second period.

After setting up both of Noesen's goals, Meurs scored one of his own at 4:18 of the third to secure a Plymouth victory.
