The Detroit Red Wings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 in a preseason game at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, on Friday.

Forward Evgeny Svechnikov scored two goals for Detroit.

Forward Brendan Leipsic scored for Toronto.

The Maple Leafs and Red Wings play again Saturday at Joe Louis Arena in each team's preseason finale.

Slavin scores shootout winner for Hurricanes

Defenseman Jaccob Slavin scored the winning goal in a shootout to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 victory against the Washington Capitals in a preseason game at PNC Arena on Friday. 

Jeff Skinner and Teuvo Teravainen also scored shootout goals for Carolina. Evgeny Kuznetsov and Andre Burakovsky scored for the Capitals. 

Goalie Cam Ward made 22 saves, including one in the shootout. Defenseman Noah Hanifin scored a power-play goal and had an assist for the Hurricanes, which ended preseason play Friday. They open the regular season against the Winnipeg Jets at MTS Centre on Thursday (8 p.m. ET; TSN3, FS-CR). 

Defenseman John Carlson had a power-play goal and an assist, and Dmitry Orlov had two assists for Washington. Goalie Braden Holtby made 29 saves. 

The Capitals wrap up the preseason Sunday against the New York Islanders at Verizon Center.

Kane, Reinhart lead Sabres over Senators

Evander Kane and Sam Reinhart each had two points to help the Buffalo Sabres defeat the Ottawa Senators 4-2 in each team's preseason finale at Canadian Tire Centre on Friday.

Reinhart gave the Sabres a 1-0 lead at 10:41 of the first period and Kane made it 4-1 at 8:18 of the third, with Reinhart getting the assist.

Center Jack Eichel had an assist and was plus-2 in 18:31 of ice time and forward Derek Grant scored a shorthanded goal to give the Sabres a 3-0 lead at 7:22 of the second period.

Goalie Robin Lehner made 30 saves for Buffalo.

Forwards Kyle Turris and Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored, and goalie Craig Anderson allowed four goals on 25 shots for Ottawa.

The Senators open the season against the Toronto Maple Leafs at home Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; TVA Sports, SN). The Sabres open against the Montreal Canadiens at KeyBank Center on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; SN360, MSG-B, RDS).



Stars top Kings in Las Vegas' first NHL game

The Dallas Stars defeated the Los Angeles Kings 6-3 on Friday in the first NHL game at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Julius Honka, Johnny Oduya and Radek Faksa scored in the second period to give Dallas a 4-2 lead. Patrik Nemeth scored twice, and Jason Spezza had an empty-net goal for the Stars.

Michael Mersch, Dustin Brown and Nic Dowd scored for Los Angeles, which plays the Colorado Avalanche here on Saturday.

T-Mobile Arena will be the home of Las Vegas when it begins play next season.

Vrbata, DeAngelo lift Coyotes past Sharks

Radim Vrbata scored a tiebreaking goal in the second period, and the Arizona Coyotes defeated the San Jose Sharks 3-1 in a preseason game Friday.

Vrbata scored 8:48 into second, after teammate Anthony DeAngelo scored with 6:12 left in the first period to tie the game 1-1. Coyotes captain Shane Doan scored with 11 seconds left in the third.

Joonas Donskoi scored 3:37 into the first period for San Jose.

Coyotes goalie Mike Smith made 29 saves. Martin Jones made 20 saves for the Sharks.
