Martin Frk and Brendan Smith scored second-period goals to help the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-2 preseason win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday.

After Carter Rowney and Kris Letang scored for Pittsburgh to tie the game 2-2, Frk scored a power-play goal at 15:11, 1:10 after Letang's shorthanded goal, and Smith scored at 17:24.

Gustav Nyquist and Tyler Bertuzzi gave Detroit a 2-0 lead in the first period. Steve Ott scored with 17 seconds left in the third.

Penguins forward Phil Kessel played 21:13, had four shots on goal and was minus-2 in his first preseason game since having surgery on his hand during the offseason. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury allowed four goals on 29 shots.

Jared Coreau made 30 saves for Detroit.

Anthony Beauvillier lifts Islanders past Devils

New York Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier scored the game-winning goal with 6:20 remaining in a 3-2 victory against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Wednesday.

Alan Quine and Andrew Ladd also scored for New York. Ben Lovejoy and Adam Henrique had the New Jersey goals.

Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss made 19 saves, and Devils goalie Cory Schneider had 30.

 

Hurricanes defeat Sabres in shootout

Jeff Skinner scored the only goal of the shootout to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 preseason win against the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.

Justin Bailey scored a shorthanded goal for Buffalo to tie the game in the third period. Evander Kane also scored for the Sabres.

Buffalo forward Ryan O'Reilly left the game with a lower-body injury. It was his first preseason game since playing for Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey 2016. Coach Dan Bylsma said O'Reilly was held out as a precaution after he tweaked a muscle in the first period.

Roland McKeown and Elias Lindholm scored to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead.

The game was played at Essar Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

 

Capitals win behind Christian Thomas, T.J. Oshie

T.J. Oshie and Christian Thomas each scored two goals to lift the Washington Capitals to a 4-2 preseason win against the St. Louis Blues at Sprint Center in Kansas City on Wednesday.

Vladimir Tarasenko and Dmitrij Jaskin scored for St. Louis.

It was Blues forward Alexander Steen's first preseason game. He had surgery on his left shoulder June 3.

 

Avalanche shut out Stars in preseason game

Calvin Pickard made 28 saves, and Andreas Martinsen scored a first-period goal for the Colorado Avalanche in a 1-0 preseason win against the Dallas Stars on Wednesday.

Martinsen scored 8:25 into the game.

Kari Lehtonen made 19 saves for Dallas.

 

Matthew Tkachuk lifts Flames to preseason win

Matthew Tkachuk scored the only goal in the shootout to give the Calgary Flames a 2-1 preseason win against the Arizona Coyotes at Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday.

Tkachuk scored at 6:41 of the first period to tie it 1-1 after Coyotes forward Christian Dvorak had opened the scoring 29 seconds earlier.

Flames goalie Brian Elliott made 21 saves through overtime, and then denied all three Coyotes in the shootout. Arizona goalie Mike Smith had 36 saves.

 

Jonathan Bernier, Ducks shut out Sharks

Jonathan Bernier made 22 saves to help the Anaheim Ducks to a 2-0 preseason win against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Wednesday.

Corey Perry and Joseph Cramarossa scored second-period goals.

Sharks goalie Martin Jones made 19 saves on 21 shots.
