Nyquist, meet Stanley

Kentucky Derby favorite gets race day visitor

by @NHL

Hours before his Run for the Roses in the Kentucky Derby, Nyquist the horse received a visit from a high-profile trophy on Saturday.

Tweet from @KentuckyDerby: When you're the favorite in the #KyDerby and named after @GNyquist, the Stanley Cup comes to you.

The horse, owned by J. Paul Reddam and named after Detroit Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist, will run from the No. 13 post. He was the morning line favorite at 3-1.

Nyquist the horse actually defied superstition by touching the Stanley Cup:

The Red Wings also passed along their wishes to the horse that bears their forward's name:

Tweet from @DetroitRedWings: Happy #DerbyDay! Sending positive vibes to @TheNyquistHorse in the 142nd running of the @KentuckyDerby! #KyDerby
