Numbers show Alfredsson's status among peers

by Evan Sporer

Longtime Ottawa Senators forward Daniel Alfredsson, who retired Thursday, compiled numbers that rank him at or near the top of players of his generation.

Here are a few that particularly stand out:

1 -- Alfredsson is the only player selected in the 1994 NHL Draft to reach 1,000 points; Patrik Elias (994 for the New Jersey Devils) could become the second.

2 -- Alfredsson finished with the second-most points from a Swedish born skater in NHL history, trailing Mats Sundin (1,349-1,157).

4 -- From when Alfredsson made his NHL debut to today, he ranks fourth in assists with 713. The players ahead of him are Joe Thornton, Jaromir Jagr and fellow countryman Nicklas Lidstrom.

5 -- Also since Alfredsson debuted, he ranks fifth in goals (444) and points (1,157). The only players to have scored more goals are Jarome Iginla, Teemu Selanne, Jagr and Marian Hossa, and the only ones with more points are Jagr, Selanne, Thornton and Iginla.

6 -- The number of NHL All-Star teams Alfredsson made.

8 -- From Alfredsson's debut in 1995 to today, Alfredsson ranks eighth in games played (1,246).

10 -- The number of points Alfredsson had during Sweden run to the gold medal at the 2006 Turin Olympics. It led Sweden and was second in the tournament (Teemu Selanne, Saku Koivu, Finland, 11).

25 -- The number of shorthanded goals Alfredsson scored for the Senators, a franchise-high.

49 -- Alfredsson's playoff goals scored for Ottawa, the most in franchise history.

51 -- Alfredsson's playoff assists, more than any Senators player.

69 -- Power-play goals Alfredsson scored for Ottawa, another Senators record.

100 -- Playoff points for Alfredsson with the Senators, a franchise record.

121 -- Alfredsson's playoff games, more than any player in Senators history.

426, 682, and 1,108 -- Alfredsson's Senators records in goals, assists, and points.

3,320 -- Alfredsson's shots on goal with the Senators.
