VGK@EDM: Roy deflects puck past Koskinen for PPG

Nicolas Roy signed a two-year, $1.5 million contract with the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday. It has an average annual value of $750,000.

The 23-year-old forward, who was acquired in a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes for forward Erik Haula on June 27, 2019, could have become a restricted free agent after this season.

"This is so exciting," Roy said. "When I was traded here, my goal was to earn another contract. I want to try and help this team and I think I can. It's a great organization and we have a lot of great players. This is a big day for me."

Roy had 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 28 games when the season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. He scored his first NHL goal in his Golden Knights debut; it was the game-winner in a 5-2 victory against the Anaheim Ducks on Oct. 27.

"He's a big guy (6-foot-4, 200 pounds), and he's just growing into his body and getting some of that strength that you need to be able to create some room for yourself at this level," Vegas coach Peter DeBoer said. "He's got a high IQ, he's highly skilled and he makes a lot of plays. He's good defensively. He's got a big upside."

Roy was selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the fourth round (No. 96) of the 2015 NHL Draft and played seven NHL games for them.
