Chosen by the Vegas Golden Knights with the No. 13 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, Suzuki was traded to Montreal by Vegas for forward Max Pacioretty on Sept. 10, 2018. He has scored 41 points in each of his first two seasons with the Canadiens and is their projected No. 1 center on a line with left wing Tyler Toffoli and right wing Cole Caufield.
"For me, I just want to keep progressing," Suzuki said. "I feel like I've done a good job of that over my junior career and into the NHL, just getting better every year. Trying to have a bigger role. I can still improve in a lot of different area so I think as a player, I'm still growing and I think management saw that and they're committed to me for a long time."
Suzuki, who led the Canadiens in goals and points in the playoffs last season, has become a leader on the team, forward Brendan Gallagher said.
"He's matured, he's grown and he's certainly earned everything he's been given in our locker room," Gallagher said. "We rely on him a lot. He's a leader in the sense that people are going to follow what he does, what he says and I think he's starting to understand that he has that respect of his teammates as well."
