Nick Jensen for contract story

Nick Jensen signed a three-year, $12.15 million contract with the Washington Capitals on Tuesday. It has an average annual value of $4.05 million.

The 32-year-old defenseman is in the final season of a four-year, $10 million contract ($2.5 million AAV) he signed with Washington on Feb. 22, 2019, the day he was acquired in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings for defenseman Madison Bowey and a second-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. He could have become an unrestricted free agent after the season.
Jensen has an NHL career-high 24 points (two goals, 22 assists) in 62 games this season. He is also second on the Capitals in blocks (110) and short-handed ice time per game (2:31), behind defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk (137, 2:33).
Selected by Detroit in the fifth round (No. 150) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Jensen has 115 points (15 goals, 100 assists) in 469 regular-season games with the Red Wings and Capitals, and no points in 26 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
