Niagara's top line combines for 12 points as IceDogs rout Colts 7-1 @NHLdotcom

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The IceDogs' top line came through with 12 points as Niagara clinched a playoff spot with a 7-1 win over the Barrie Colts in Ontario Hockey League action Sunday.

Andrew Merrett had his first career hat trick and an assist and Luca Caputi and Mike Swift had a goal and three assists each for the IceDogs (32-23-0-1).

Swift's goal was the 100th of his OHL career and Caputi moved to within one point of tying Swift for the franchise season points record. Caputi, the Pittsburgh Penguins' fourth-round draft pick in 2007, is fourth in OHL scoring with 43 goals and 49 assists for 92 points.

Chris DeSousa had the other two goals for the IceDogs, who had a 29-23 shots advantage over the Colts (24-27-3-3).

Alex Hutchings had the lone Colts goal.
