Wayne Gretzky is the holder of many NHL records that may never be broken. However, there is one mark that you may be able to beat all by yourself in 2016-17.
NHL.com Beat the Streak challenges you to break Gretzky's NHL-record 51-game point streak, set in 1983-84. While Gretzky was able to play with a few Hall of Famers, fans will be powered by any and every player in the NHL. Surpassing "The Great One" promises to be a daunting task, but accomplishing the feat would come with a high reward ... $1,000,000!
The object of the game is to put together a point-scoring streak by choosing one or two different skaters each night who you believe will record at least one point (goal or assist). If a player you select scores at least one point, your streak grows by one. If a skater does not record a point, your streak ends and you'll be able to start a new streak the next day.
The first person to reach 52 wins the grand prize of $1,000,000. If Gretzky's streak remains unbroken at the end of the season, the fan with the longest streak at any point will take home the top prize of $5,000.
The game is available for free on the App Store (iOS) and only takes seconds to play and track your performance each day. Download the app now.
The NHL's version of the game is modeled after MLB.com's popular Beat the Streak game, which challenges fans to break Joe DiMaggio's MLB-record 56-game hitting streak from 1941. No fan has reached 56 games in the 16 years since the launch of the game, but several fans have reached the upper 40s in recent seasons.
