NHL trend: Hiring head coaches from minor league @NHLdotcom

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - New Minnesota Wild coach Mike Yeo came to the job as a first-time NHL head coach.

That's the trend these days. The American Hockey League isn't just a feeder system of young players. It has become a coach factory, too.

Of the 30 head coaches in the league, 13 were hired from the AHL without any prior experience as an NHL head coach.

Two more had previously been an NHL head coach but had an AHL head coaching job as the most recent line on their resume.

Yeo is the latest experiment. After the Wild fired first-time coach Todd Richards after two seasons, they turned to Yeo, who coached their minor league affiliate the Houston Aeros to the AHL finals last season.
