10-7 Myers VAN buzz

Welcome to the 2022-23 NHL training camp buzz. Training camp is underway for all 32 teams and NHL.com has you covered with all the latest news.

Vancouver Canucks

Tyler Myers is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with a lower-body injury, Canucks coach Bruce Boudreau said Friday after the defenseman missed a second straight practice.
Myers hasn't been on the ice since a 5-4 preseason win against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday. He had 18 points (one goal, 17 assists) in 82 games last season, and was third among Canucks defensemen in ice time per game (21:25).
Boudreau also said forward Brock Boeser, who had surgery on his hand Sept. 26, is expected to practice in full Sunday and join the team on a season-opening five game road trip that starts at the Oilers on Oct. 12. Boeser, injured in a training camp practice, was originally expected to miss 3-4 weeks but resumed skating soon after surgery.
"He's been out there skating and handling the puck and he's determined to want to try it, so we'll see how it works out at Sunday's practice," Boudreau said.
Forward Ilya Mikheyev, who was listed as week to week after sustaining a lower-body injury Sept 25, is also expected to practice in a non-contact jersey Sunday and join the Canucks on the road trip.
The Canucks also said forward Phillip Di Giuseppe has a lower-body injury and likely will be out 2-4 weeks and that defenseman Travis Dermott has a concussion.

Washington Capitals

Forward T.J. Oshie (upper-body injury) and defenseman Dmitry Orlov (lower-body injury) participated in the Capitals' optional morning skate but won't play in their preseason finale against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday after each was injured in a 4-2 victory against the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday.
"It's the next steps in the process," Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said Saturday. "So, the fact that they're out here participating, getting in a good workout, that's really good for us and, hopefully, it continues to go that way."
Washington hopes Oshie and Orlov will be ready for the regular-season opener against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday.
"It's still day to day, but they're out here," Laviolette said. "We've got a game (Saturday) and practice tomorrow and then one more practice before that, so we'll see where everything's at, see how they're feeling and then make decisions."
Forward Lars Eller also participated in the morning skate after missing practice Friday because of an illness but won't play in the preseason finale.-- Tom Gulitti

Toronto Maple Leafs

John Tavares, who sustained an oblique injury in a 4-1 preseason win against the Ottawa Senators on Sept. 24, took part in practice on Saturday with the Maple Leafs non-game group.
The injury was expected to keep the center out a minimum of three weeks, meaning he could miss the regular-season opener against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.
"I would love to be ready to go for Wednesday, but you have to look at the big picture, four games in six nights and we have an 82-game grind," Tavares said. "Continue to hit my checkpoints day by day, get the feedback and we'll assess each day where I'm at."
Jake Muzzin and Pierre Engvall will each make his preseason debut against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.
Muzzin, a defenseman, has been managing back discomfort during training camp. He returned to full practice on Sept. 29 after missing the first week of training camp. He is expected to skate on a pairing with Justin Holl.
Engvall, a forward, has been recovering from a foot injury sustained in the offseason. He expected to play left wing on a line with center Alexander Kerfoot and right wing Calle Jarnkrok. -- Dave McCarthy

Philadelphia Flyers

Joel Farabee is optimistic he'll be able to play in the season opener against the New Jersey Devils on Oct. 13.
The forward, who had disk replacement surgery in his cervical region June 24, was cleared for contact Friday. He was expected to need 3-4 months to recover.
"When I first got surgery, I didn't think I'd be in (training) camp at all," Farabee said. "So to be able to do all the skating in camp and do some of the practices was good for me. I feel like if I didn't do that it probably would have been a little tougher to get back. But my conditioning is there and I think it's just get the timing and all that down and then I'll be ready."
Coach John Tortorella said he hopes to get Farabee in the lineup "as soon as possible."
"I think he's practiced really well," Tortorella said. "He's had contact, now he's cleared for full contact. We still have a few days here. I'm hoping [he can play] opening night."
Goalie Felix Sandstrom, who has been out with a lower-body injury sustained Oct. 1, skated but is not ready to practice. Carter Hart and Samuel Ersson are the only healthy goalies on the roster after Troy Grosenick was placed on waivers Friday with the intention of sending him to Lehigh Valley of the American Hockey League.-- Adam Kimelman

Pittsburgh Penguins

Teddy Blueger skated with the Penguins on Friday for the first time since sustaining an upper-body injury.
The forward wore a no-contact jersey in an optional morning skate before a preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres. Blueger worked on his own before recent practices but had not joined his teammates since being injured early in practice on Sept. 28.
"It is a step," coach Mike Sullivan said. "He skated this morning with [skills coach Ty Hennes]. He joined the group. That's an important step for him. He's making significant progress. We're really encouraged."
Blueger is usually the fourth-line center, a spot currently occupied by forward Ryan Poehling.
"We're hopeful that [Blueger will] join us for practice after the game here for the next week or so, and participate in a full capacity," Sullivan said. "That's obviously the final step before his return to play. But he's making progress."
The Penguins open the regular season at home against the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday.

St. Louis Blues

Vladimir Tarasenko was in the lineup for the Blues' preseason finale against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.
The forward did not play in a 7-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday after missing time with an illness earlier in the week.
Forward Ivan Barbashev, who had been dealing with a lower-body injury, was also in the lineup. Forward Logan Brown, who has an upper-body injury, did not play.
The Blues announced Tuesday that defenseman Scott Perunovich will be out at least six months for the Blues because of a shoulder injury.

Carolina Hurricanes

Brett Pesce did not practice with the Hurricanes on Thursday after leaving their 8-1 preseason win against the Blue Jackets on Monday with a lower-body injury.
Coach Rod Brind'Amour said he expects the defenseman to be ready for Carolina's regular-season opener against Columbus on Oct. 12.
"Just precautionary more than anything," Brind'Amour said. "We certainly don't want anything lingering into the season here when we get started, so anybody that's got any kind of nicks, you're not going to see him out here right now."
Dylan Coghlan practiced Thursday after the defenseman left Carolina's preseason finale, a 4-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday, with a lower-body injury. The Hurricanes did not practice Wednesday. -- Tom Gulitti

Detroit Red Wings

Andrew Copp is expected to be ready for the Red Wings regular-season opener against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 14.
The forward had abdominal surgery in the offseason and missed training camp. It was unclear if he would be ready for opening night.
Copp, who signed a five-year contract with the Red Wings in the offseason, had 53 points (21 goals, 32 assists) in 72 games with the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets last season.

Montreal Canadiens

Nick Suzuki is day to day with an upper-body injury and did not accompany the Canadiens for their 4-3 preseason loss to the Ottawa Senators in Gander, Newfoundland, on Thursday.
The forward had two assists in 22:15 of ice time in his first game of the preseason, a 5-4 loss to the Senators on Tuesday; he had been dealing with a lower-body injury.
"It's not ideal," Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis said Thursday. "Obviously the time away from the team as much as you are going to do stuff in the gym, you can't replicate the game so you're behind physically. ... You have to work hard to stay on top of that so when you come back, you're not so far away."
Forward Joel Armia, who scored Tuesday, also did not play Thursday because of an upper-body injury.
The Canadiens open the regular season Oct. 12 against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
