NHL to announce SuperSkills roster today

by Dan Rosen
Who do you think has the hardest shot, Zdeno Chara or Sheldon Souray?

The NHL will apparently let the hulking defensemen figure it out on their own Saturday night in Montreal, but we won't know for certain until 4 p.m. ET today when the field for the rest of the events at the 2009 Honda/NHL SuperSkills is revealed on

As if anyone with a hockey brain is really surprised, Chara and Souray should highlight the Cisco NHL Hardest Shot competition, which is one of the six events in the SuperSkills Competition on Saturday night at the Bell Centre.

The other events include the Scotiabank NHL Fan Fav Breakaway Challenge, which is the highlight of the night, the NHL YoungStars Game presented by Upper Deck as well as the Bridgestone NHL Fastest Skater and McDonalds NHL Accuracy Shooting competitions. The night will end with all 36 skaters taking part in the Gatorade NHL Elimination Shootout.

Reportedly, Chara and Souray have already talked a little trash to one another about the event, which should only make the event that much more intriguing.

With Souray sidelined last season due to injury last season, Chara won this event for a second-straight time, topping out with a 103.1 mph blast. It was second-hardest in the event's history behind Al Iafrate's 105.2 mph shot in 1993.

Chara also won in 2007 with a 100.4-mph rocket, which topped Souray's best shot of 100.0 mph. Souray has never won the event outright, though he did tie with Adrian Aucoin in 2004 with a blast of 102.2 mph. This is his third All-Star Game.

It would be fitting that either Chara or Souray break Iafrate's record this year. After all, Iafrate set his record 16 years ago at the Montreal Forum. It was the last time the NHL All-Star Game has been played in the home of Les Habitants. Souray topped Iafrates's mark with a 106.7 mph shot recently in a skills competition held by the Oilers.

We already know that Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Ryan Getzlaf, Patrick Kane and Alex Kovalev will be competing in the Breakaway Challenge, which should be the highlight of the night. The rosters for the YoungStars Game have also been announced.

At 4 p.m. ET today, you can learn the rest of the field for the Hardest Shot competition as well as the rosters for the Fastest Skater and Accuracy Shooting competitions.

Stay tuned.
