Ticketmaster NHL Save Streak Recap

SAN JOSE -- Henrik Lundqvist raised his arms high in the air in celebration after winning the Ticketmaster NHL Save Streak at the 2019 SAP NHL All-Star Skills at SAP Center on Friday.

It is his go-to move after a big win with the New York Rangers, but this time it was for fun, bragging rights and a prize of $25,000.
Lundqvist, the last of the eight goalies to go, made a save on Toronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares, his ninth in a row, and his arms went up in the air. It was enough for Lundqvist to surpass Tampa Bay Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy's streak of eight and win the event.

Lundqvist finished with 12 consecutive saves before he was beaten by Buffalo Sabres forward Jeff Skinner. Lundqvist raised his arms again in celebration when he was announced as the winner.
"You've got to do a little extra, try to show some emotions out there," Lundqvist said. "I think it's fine to give it for the fans too and enjoy that moment. At the same time, when it comes down to it, of course you want to compete and try to make the most of it."
Vasilevskiy said he was waiting for someone to top his eight in a row because Marc-Andre Fleury won the event last year with 14 straight saves.
"Eight is not enough," Vasilevskiy said. "It's a pretty tough position for a goalie, but when guys are able to stop 12 breakaways in a row against the best shooters in the world, that's pretty impressive."

Lundqvist credited luck for a few of his saves, like the one when Lightning center Steven Stamkos almost beat him five-hole but the puck hit his pad and went outside the post.
That was his eighth straight, tying Vasilevskiy. If Stamkos scored, he would have won the event for his teammate.
"We were laughing about that," Vasilevskiy said.
"I told [Stamkos] in the locker room afterwards that I owe him a couple drinks, and he gladly accepted," Lundqvist said. "So we'll settle things."
Lundqvist also said Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov had him beat with a move that would have ended his streak at five saves, but the puck went wide.
"He got me," Lundqvist said. "His record speaks for itself. He's one of the best players in the game and he can really make you look pretty stupid out there. But luckily for me it went far side, so it was good."
Lundqvist said the key to winning the event, just like when he faces a breakaway in a game, was to stay patient. However, his streak ended at 12 because he tried a poke check on Skinner, the opposite of patience for a goalie.
"And I missed it, and then I was done," Lundqvist said. "That's the thing, sooner or later you will make a mistake and it costs you. That's how it works. Same thing in a game."
Outside of winning, what made the competition and the night special for Lundqvist was he was able to compete in an All-Star Weekend event in front of his daughters, who are 4 and 6 years old.
"Yeah, if they were still awake," Lundqvist said, laughing. "They enjoy coming to the games in New York, and here it's special. To bring your kids now, 4 and 6, they start to understand what I'm doing and why I'm gone so much.
"When you're younger and you don't have kids you don't realize how much you're gone, how much you travel, how much you commit to this game. But when you do have kids and they start asking all the time why you're leaving, why you're gone, why you're not home, then you start to pay attention. … So it's fun when you can bring them on the road like this and show them what I do."
