Super 16: Blue Jackets rise to No. 1

The Columbus Blue Jackets are on a 13-game winning streak, the longest in their history. A streak like that comes with its perks. Chief among them, at least for our causes, is the fact that you get to rise to the top of NHL.com's weekly Super 16.
The Blue Jackets, who haven't lost since Nov. 26 and haven't lost in regulation since Nov. 23, a span of more than five weeks, are the new No. 1 by virtue of receiving eight first-place votes among the 13 staff members who participate in the weekly rankings exercise.

It was three polls ago that Nick Cotsonika went out on what seemed to be a limb at the time and ranked the Blue Jackets first. Now he's joined by Arpon Basu, Tim Campbell, Brian Compton, Lisa Dillman, Tom Gulitti, Robert Laflamme and Bill Price.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, who were No. 1 for the past three weeks, dropped to second, two points behind the Blue Jackets.
The rankings are calculated by a points-based system based on the votes by the 13 participating staff members. Point values are assigned to each ranking. The point values are assigned as follows: 16 points for a No. 1 ranking, down to one point for a No. 16 ranking.
The streaking Minnesota Wild, who have won 11 straight games, moved up to No. 4, jumping the New York Rangers, who lost to the Wild 7-4 on Dec. 23, Montreal Canadiens and Washington Capitals.

1. Columbus Blue Jackets (24-5-4)

Total points: 201
Last week: No. 3
Hit: Sergei Bobrovsky is 11-0-0 with a .944 save percentage during the 13-game winning streak. He has allowed 17 goals on 305 shots in 11 starts since Nov. 29.
Miss: None. Zero. Zip. Nada.

2. Pittsburgh Penguins (24-8-5)

Total points: 199
Last week: No. 1
Hit: Sidney Crosby is on pace for 64 goals this season. He had 26 goals in 31 games, an average of 0.839 goals per game. He missed the first six games of the season with a concussion.
Miss: Chris Kunitz has scored three goals on 59 shots in 31 games, putting him on pace for a NHL career-low shooting percentage of 5.1 percent. He had a career-low 9.9 percent shooting percentage in 2009-10, when he scored 13 goals on 131 shots in 50 games.

3. Chicago Blackhawks (22-10-5)

Total points: 174
Last week: No. 2
Hit: Artemi Panarin has an NHL career-high eight-game point streak. He has five goals and nine assists in that span.
Miss: The Blackhawks are 0-3-0 against the Winnipeg Jets this season. They have been outscored 9-2 in those three games. They next play the Jets on Jan. 26.

4. Minnesota Wild (22-8-4)

Total points: 166
Last week: No. 7
Hit: Eric Staal has 13 points (six goals, seven assists) during the Wild's 11-game winning streak. He has 11 points (five goals, six assists) on an eight-game point streak.
Miss: Nothing to see here, again.

5. New York Rangers (24-12-1)

Total points: 151
Last week: No. 5
Hit: The Rangers are one of four teams, with Montreal, the St. Louis Blues and the Philadelphia Flyers the others, to have at least three defensemen with 16 points. Ryan McDonagh has 23, Nick Holden has 18, and Brady Skjei has 16.
Miss: They have allowed at least three goals in a period in each of the past three games. The Penguins scored four goals in the second period of their 7-2 win against New York on Dec. 20. Minnesota scored five goals in the second period of its 7-4 win on Dec. 23, and the Ottawa Senators scored three goals in the first period Tuesday, but the Rangers came back to win 4-3.

6. Montreal Canadiens (21-9-5)

Total points: 143
Last week: No. 4
Hit: The Canadiens have scored the first goal in 23 of their 35 games. They were 17-3-3 in those games. Only the Blue Jackets had scored first in as many games (23 of 33).
Miss: Brendan Gallagher has three goals in 34 games since scoring two on opening night.

7. Washington Capitals (20-9-4)

Total points: 131
Last week: No. 6
Hit: Alex Ovechkin needs eight points to get to 1,000 for his NHL career. Nicklas Backstrom is three assists shy of 500 in the NHL.
Miss: Evgeny Kuznetsov has gone 14 straight games without a goal. He has three goals on 61 shots (4.9 percent). He had 20 goals on 193 shots last season (10.4 percent).

8. San Jose Sharks (22-12-1)

Total points: 130
Last week: No. 8
Hit: The Sharks are 6-1 in games decided after regulation this season, including 4-1 in overtime. They have won their past two games in overtime and four of their past six wins have come after regulation.
Miss: Joel Ward has no goals in his past 13 games and has been a healthy scratch twice in the past five.

9. Philadelphia Flyers (20-13-4)

Total points: 95
Last week: No. 9
Hit: The Flyers have gotten a League-high 91 points (22 goals, 69 assists) from their defensemen, including at least a point in 32 of 36 games.
Miss: Brayden Schenn's goal in the third period against the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday ended an 0-for-17 stretch on the power play over six-plus games.

10. St. Louis Blues (19-12-5)

Total points: 87
Last week: No. 10
Hit: Patrik Berglund has four goals in his past six games.
Miss: The Blues are on pace to allow more goals than they score (103 goals for, 105 against) for the first time since the 2007-08 season, when they allowed 232 and scored 202.

11. Ottawa Senators (20-12-3)

Total points: 79
Last week: No. 11
Hit: The Senators have scored three goals in a period in three of their past four games.
Miss: Curtis Lazar has no points in 15 games since being recalled from Binghamton of the American Hockey League on Nov. 19. He played 7:09 against the Rangers on Wednesday. It was a season-low for a game he finished healthy. Lazar had four points in 13 games with Binghamton before getting recalled.

12. Anaheim Ducks (17-12-7)

Total points: 63
Last week: No. 12
Hit: Jakob Silfverberg has scored in back-to-back games and has 10 goals in 36 games. He leads the Ducks with 18 even-strength points.
Miss: The Ducks are 0-6 in games decided in overtime and 1-7 in games decided after regulation.

13. Edmonton Oilers (18-12-6)

Total points: 60
Last week: No. 13
Hit: The Oilers are 5-1-4 in their past 10 road games and 10-5-5 (25 points) on the road this season, putting them five points shy of tying their total road points from last season, when they were 12-23-6.
Miss: Jordan Eberle has no points in his past six games and a goal in his past 15.

14. Boston Bruins (18-15-4)

Total points: 30
Last week: No. 14
Hit: The Bruins have outshot opponents in seven consecutive games by a combined 264-186, which averages out to 37.7 shots on goal per game and 26.6 SOG per game against.
Miss: Patrice Bergeron's production issues continue. He has two points in his past 11 games, giving him 10 points (five goals, five assists) in 34 games this season.

15. Calgary Flames (19-16-2)

Total points: 29

Hit: The Flames lead the League in winning percentage in one-goal games (.769). They are 10-1-2 in one-goal games.
Miss: They are 9-15-0 in games decided by two or more goals.
