Super 16: Canadiens enter power rankings

A blown lead and regulation loss to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday didn't deter the NHL.com staff from keeping the Nashville Predators as the No. 1 team in the Super 16 power rankings for the second straight week.

The Predators were ranked No. 1 by eight of the 13 participating staff members and No. 2 by another three. Everybody had them at least in the top four.
The Colorado Avalanche made the biggest week-to-week jump, moving up to No. 7 from No. 13 last week. The New Jersey Devils, losers of two in a row after winning their first four games, dropped from No. 6 to No. 13, and the Anaheim Ducks fell from No. 7 to No. 14.
The Montreal Canadiens, winners of five of their first eight games, are making their season debut in the Super 16, at No. 12 this week.
To create the power rankings, each of the 13 staff members put together his or her version of what the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total is assigned to each.
The team picked first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third gets 14 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.
Here is the latest Super 16, with some news and notes to follow for each team:

1. Nashville Predators (7-2-0)

Total points: 200
Last week: No. 1
Hit:The "JOFA" line of Ryan Johansen, Filip Forsberg and Viktor Arvidsson has combined for 28 points (14 goals, 14 assists). Forsberg has 10 points (six goals, four assists), and Arvidsson (six goals, three assists) and Johansen (two goals, seven assists) each has nine.
Miss: Pekka Rinne has missed the past two games with an undisclosed injury he sustained against the Calgary Flames on Oct. 19. The goalie is on injured reserve.

2. Tampa Bay Lightning (6-1-1)

Total points: 196
Last week: No. 3
Hit:The Lightning set their record for most successful penalty kills to start a season (28) before allowing a power-play goal in their 6-3 win at the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday. The previous record was 26 straight, set in 2000-01. It's a massive turnaround on the PK for the Lightning, who finished 28th in the NHL last season (76.1 percent).
Miss: Steven Stamkos is off to a slower-than-expected start with four points (one goal, three assists) in seven games.

3. Winnipeg Jets (6-3-1)

Total points: 179
Last week: No. 5
Hit:The Jets have scored a power-play goal in six straight games, going 7-for-18. They went 4-1-1 in those games.
Miss:Patrik Laine is off to a slow start with five points (three goals, two assists) in five games.

4. Toronto Maple Leafs (7-3-0)

Total points: 157
Last week: No. 2
Hit:The Maple Leafs have one man-game lost to injury through their first 10 games. Goalie Frederik Andersen missed a 4-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 15 because of a knee injury.
Miss:ForwardWilliam Nylander remains a restricted free agent.

5. Pittsburgh Penguins (4-1-2)

Total points: 133
Last week: No. 10
Hit:Evgeni Malkin has 13 points (three goals, 10 assists), including at least one point in six of Pittsburgh's seven games and two or more in four of the games.
Miss:The Penguins have been outshot 85-62 in the third period. They are allowing 36.0 shots on goal per game, six more than they're generating, despite winning 53.1 percent of their face-offs.

6. Boston Bruins (5-2-2)

Total points: 132
Last week: No. 4
Hit: David Pastrnak has scored 10 goals in nine games. He's the sixth player in Bruins history to score at least 10 goals in October in a single season. He needs three more in Boston's last three games of the month to tie Phil Esposito's Bruins record for most goals, set in October 1973.
Miss:Their defensemen are banged up. They played the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday without three of their top six -- Torey Krug (ankle), Kevan Miller (upper body) and Charlie McAvoy (undisclosed) -- and Urho Vaakanainen left late in the first period of the 4-1 win with a concussion.

7. Colorado Avalanche (6-2-2)

Total points: 127
Last week: No. 13
Hit: Mikko Rantanen and Nathan MacKinnon each had his nine-game point streak to start the season come to an end in a 1-0 loss to the Lightning on Wednesday. They are the first set of teammates to open a season with point streaks of at least nine games in Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques history.
Miss:Forward J.T. Compher has missed five straight games with a concussion. There is no timetable for his return.

8. Washington Capitals (4-2-2)

Total points: 120
Last week: No. 8
Hit:Alex Ovechkin already has three multigoal games this season. He scored two each in wins against the Vegas Golden Knights (5-2), New York Rangers (4-3 in overtime) and Vancouver Canucks (5-2).
Miss:Andre Burakovsky has zero points, seven shots on goal and a minus-7 rating.

9. San Jose Sharks (5-3-1)

Total points: 115
Last week: No. 12
Hit:Brent Burns has 10 points (two goals, eight assists) during a six-game point streak. He didn't have a point in San Jose's first three games.
Miss:Center Joe Thornton has missed seven straight games since he developed an infection in his surgically repaired right knee after playing the Kings on Oct. 5.

10. Carolina Hurricanes (5-3-1)

Total points: 68
Last week: No. 9
Hit:Sebastian Aho has a nine-game point streak to open the season (four goals, 10 assists). He is two shy of tying Ron Francis' record for consecutive games with at least one point to start a season in Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers history. Francis had an 11-game streak for Hartford to start the 1984-85 season.
Miss:Despite going 2-for-3 on the power play in their 3-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, the Hurricanes are 28th in the NHL with the man-advantage (12.1 percent; 4-for-33).

11. Chicago Blackhawks (5-2-2)

Total points: 67
Last week: No. 11
Hit: Corey Crawford has allowed five goals on 93 shots (.946 save percentage) in his three starts since returning to the Blackhawks net after missing the start of the season because of concussion symptoms. He has allowed two goals on 63 shots (.968 save percentage) in his past two starts, each a win.
Miss:The long change in the second period has been an issue for the Blackhawks. They've been outscored 10-4 and outshot 125-83 in the second period. They've outscored and outshot the opposition 29-23 and 235-197 in the other periods, including overtime.

12. Montreal Canadiens (5-1-2)

Total points: 65
Last week: NR
Hit:Max Domi has two goals and three assists in a four-game point streak. He has eight points (two goals, six assists) in eight games this season.
Miss: Forward Tomas Plekanec is out with a back injury. He's missed the past two games, and it's not clear when he'll be able to return, but it could be several weeks.

13. New Jersey Devils (4-2-0)

Total points: 56
Last week: No. 6
Hit:Taylor Hall, who won the Hart Trophy last season, has one goal and seven assists in a five-game point streak.
Miss:The Devils have allowed five goals in each of their past two games, each a loss. They allowed a total of four goals in their first four games, all wins.

14. Anaheim Ducks (5-4-1)

Total points: 38
Last week: No. 7
Hit:John Gibson has faced the most shots in the NHL (294) and has a .949 save percentage, which is third among goalies with at least three starts, behind Semyon Varlamov of the Avalanche (.953) and David Rittich of the Flames (.950).
Miss:The Ducks are generating the fewest shots on goal per game (23.9) and allowing the most shots on goal per game (37.9).

15. Minnesota Wild (4-2-2)

Total points: 31
Last week: NR
Hit:The Wild have won three games in a row, and Zach Parise has scored in the past two. He has 10 points (three goals, seven assists) and a plus-7 rating in eight games.
Miss: They've been chasing in games this season, having been outscored 9-5 in the first period. The Wild have allowed the first goal in six of their eight games. They're 4-1-1 in those games.

16. Vegas Golden Knights (4-4-1)

Total points: 25
Last week: No. 16
Hit: Alex Tuch, who signed a seven-year contract worth $4.75 million annually, made his season debut in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Canucks on Wednesday after missing the first eight games with a lower-body injury.
Miss:Defenseman Deryk Engelland has missed the past three games with an undisclosed injury. He is on injured reserve.
