Super 16: Lightning take over No. 1 spot

There is a new No. 1 in the NHL.com Super 16 this week, and a couple of teams that had low expectations two weeks ago continue to rise in the power rankings.
The Tampa Bay Lightning take over the top spot after coming in fourth last week. The Lightning, 3-0-1 since the Super 16 came out last Thursday, were ranked first by nine of the 13 staff members who participated in the Super 16 rankings this week.

In addition, the New Jersey Devils and Vegas Golden Knights, each surprising everyone with five wins in their first six games, moved up in the Super 16 this week. The Devils jumped six spots to No. 7, and the Golden Knights climbed two spots to No. 9.
The Devils were ranked as high as fifth by Brian Compton. The Golden Knights were ranked as high as sixth by Nick Cotsonika, Bill Price, Amalie Benjamin and Compton.
To create the power rankings, each of the participating staff members puts together his or her version of what they think the Super 16 should look like. Those are submitted and a point total is assigned to each.
The team picked first is given 16 points, second gets 15, third gets 14 and so on down to No. 16, which gets one point.

1. Tampa Bay Lightning (5-1-1)

Total points: 203Last week: No. 4
Hit: Nikita Kucherov has scored at least one goal in each of the Lightning's first seven games and has 12 points (eight goals, four assists). Steven Stamkos also has 12 points (two goals, 10 assists).
Miss: They're off to a terrific start, but the Lightning are allowing 3.14 goals per game and 34.9 shots on goal per game, too much of each.

2. Toronto Maple Leafs (6-1-0)

Total points: 180Last week: No. 2
Hit: They are 3-0-0 on the road and they've allowed five goals in those games. They're also 12-for-13 on the penalty kill in their three road games.
Miss: There is no glaring miss or injury of note for the Maple Leafs.

3. Chicago Blackhawks (4-2-1)

Total points: 173Last week: No. 1 Hit: Rookie defenseman Jan Rutta is producing offensively, playing solid in the defensive zone, and earning the trust of coach Joel Quenneville, who is playing him 18:55 per game, third among Chicago defensemen behind Duncan Keith (24:45) and Brent Seabrook (22:27).
Miss: The Blackhawks are allowing 36.0 shots on goal per game, third-highest in the League.

4. Columbus Blue Jackets (5-1-0)

Total points: 169Last week: No. 7
Hit: The Blue Jackets have had 11 players contribute at least one point in two straight games, a 5-4 overtime win against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday and a 5-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday.
Miss: They are 29th in the League on the power play (6.3 percent). They are 1-for-16 and have allowed one shorthanded goal.

5. Pittsburgh Penguins (4-2-1)

Total points: 148Last week: No. 6
Hit:Bryan Rust has seven assists in seven games to lead Pittsburgh.
Miss: The Penguins are allowing 4.14 goals per game, second-highest in the League after the Arizona Coyotes (4.17). The 10 goals they allowed against the Blackhawks on Oct. 5 has a lot to do with that.

6. Los Angeles Kings (5-0-1)

Total points: 136Last week: No. 10
Hit: The Kings have gotten off to a strong start in large part due to what captain Anze Kopitar says is the return of their creativity on offense without sacrificing their defensive principles.
Miss: It's hard to find a miss with the way they've started. They begin a six-game road trip at Columbus on Saturday.

7. New Jersey Devils (5-1-0)

Total points: 122Last week: No. 13
Hit: The Devils lead the League in rookie scoring with 20 points (four goals, 16 assists) from four rookies, including nine assists from defenseman Will Butcher, who ranks fourth in the League in that category.
Miss: They are allowing 35.3 shots on goal per game, fifth-highest in the League, and are 24th on the penalty kill (77.4 percent).

8. St. Louis Blues (5-2-0)

Total points: 103Last week: No. 3
Hit: Forward Alexander Steen joined the lineup against the Blackhawks on Wednesday after being activated from injured reserve earlier in the day. He missed the first six games of the season with a hand injury.
Miss: Colton Parayko has not provided the offense, especially on the power play, from the back end that the Blues were expecting. With his shot, this could change quickly.

9. Vegas Golden Knights (5-1-0)

Total points: 96Preseason rank: No. 11
Hit: Oscar Lindberg has three goals in six games. He had eight in 65 games for the New York Rangers last season.
Miss: The Golden Knights are tied for 27th in the League on the power play (7.7 percent), having scored two goals on 26 opportunities.

10. Calgary Flames (4-2-0)

Total points: 88Last week: No. 8
Hit: The Flames are thriving in part because of their penalty kill, which is 26-for-29 (89.6 percent), including 19-for-19 on the road.
Miss: They have been outscored 9-5 and outshot 82-60 in the third period this season.

11. Philadelphia Flyers (4-2-0)

Total points: 69Last week: NR
Hit: The Flyers have scored 26 goals. It's the first time since 2005-06 they have scored as many through their first six games of a season. It's the second time they've done it since 1988-89 and the 12th time in their history.
Miss: Forward Wayne Simmonds left a 5-1 win against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday with a lower-body injury. The Flyers said it was precautionary, but they aren't expected to provide an update on his status until Thursday.

12. Ottawa Senators (3-1-2)

Total points: 65Last week: NR
Hit: They lost 3-0 against the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday, but the good news was how defenseman Erik Karlsson looked in his return to the lineup. He skated well. He created chances off the rush. He defended well. He played 22:25 and had seven shot attempts.
Miss: Forwards Bobby Ryan, Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Alexandre Burrows each has not scored a goal. They've combined for 36 shots on goal.

13. Washington Capitals (3-3-1)

Total points: 64Last week: No. 5
Hit: Braden Holtby is off to a strong start with a 2.19 goals-against average and .931 save percentage in five starts. He's facing 31.8 shots on goal per game and is averaging 29.6 saves.
Miss: The Capitals have lost three of their past four games in regulation. They scored four goals in those three losses.

14. Nashville Predators (3-2-1)

Total points: 61Last week: No. 12
Hit: The Predators have scored at least one power-play goal in four straight games and in five of their first six. They are 8-for-28 with the man-advantage (28.6 percent).
Miss: They have more goals on the power play than they do at 5-on-5 (seven).

15. Dallas Stars (3-3-0)

Total points: 30Last week: No. 14
Hit: The Stars are averaging more than 10 shots on goal per game than they're allowing (36.7-26.3).
Miss: They're not making their shot differential count. Dallas has scored and allowed 14 goals.

16. Detroit Red Wings (4-3-0)

Total points: 26Last week: NR
Hit: The Red Wings for the most part have gotten better as the game has gone along this season. The third period largely has been their best period.
Miss: Defenseman Danny DeKeyser has missed four straight games with a lower-body injury.
